A disappointing experience

They have a vegan menu, so I was very excited to go there and try their vegan fish and chips. Except they didn't have the same menu that I could see online, so I had to try something different. Ok, I got the vegan English breakfast and my husband got the vegan pudding. They were both actually quite disappointing. The vegan sausages were good, but the frozen vegetables and the beans from the can weren't. I can only suggest the soup of the day: it's not on the vegan menu, but it may be vegan (just ask the staff). For us, it was the only actually good food we got there.

Pros: Soup of the day

Cons: Beans from the can, Frozen vegetables, Toast bread

Great vegan fish and chips

Ordered vegan fish and chips- the only vegan option as we werent given a separate vegan menu, so not sure if they still have it or not.

Separate Vegan Menu

Complete separate vegan menu with many vegan versions of pub classics. We had the Fish & Chips and the Hunter’s Chicken. Portions were very generous and tasty, although my partner wasn’t keen on the Hunter’s Chicken as she doesn’t like BBQ sauce - luckily she ordered the fish so it was all good! Good choice of wine and beers to go with the meal.

Classic pub grub

Great vegan menu, lots of classic pub dishes that have been veganised. Menu felt thought out and not after thought. Half price food on Tuesday was an added bonus

Lush spud

Brilliant to see a pub with a separate vegan menu. I had a spud with Sheeze and beans salad (lush) and my old man had a sausage sandwich. We had hoped to go back for dinner but dinner but were still full from our late lunch. Sadly. Bar lady was super friendly. Highly recommend.

Great Vegan Menu

Good authentic pub with a great vegan menu. Includes vegan versions of traditional English dishes such as Fish and Chips, Shepherd's Pie, Bangers and Mash..

I really enjoyed being able to eat some of my childhood favourites such as shepherds pie and bangers and mash as a vegan as vegan versions of such dishes are not always easy to come across.

Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to have veganised traditional English pub dishes.

Pros: Good Food, Nice Pub, Pool Table

Banana blossom fish and chips!!!

This pub has a separate vegan menu AND it has banana blossom fish and chips. I’m THAT vegan that doesn’t like tofish – it’s literally battered tofu, who are we trying to fool? Banana blossom is the way to go, and this pub gets it.

There was also ‘scampi’ on the menu and ‘hunter’s chicken’ which is pretty cool to see. Usually there’s a special dessert, sadly it was sold out. That’s my only negative feedback though, apparently it was black forest gateau which I have never had, as a vegan.

Good amount of vegan options

It's great to find a traditional pub with this many vegan variations of traditional pub food. The decor is laid back but not cheap or tasteless, just cosy and comfortable. I could imagine myself watching the football or having a few pints and playing pool as much as I could having my sunday lunch with the family. My bangers and mash was hearty and filling. They definitely don't scrimp on the gravy! Maybe the carrots could be seasoned a bit. Otherwise a great meal.

Pros: Good traditional pub, Friendly staff, Decent number of vegan options

Lasagna

A whole vegan menu to choose from 👍🏼. Originally ordered the 'Hunters chick'n' but it wasn't available so switched to lasagna with salad & chips. Clearly home made, very nice, with veg & lentil filling.

Pros: Lots of vegan choice

Cons: Sport TV screens

Cosy pub food

Friendly staff and a wide range of vegan pub classics, including lasagne, hunter’s chicken, fish and chips and pies. They have a small garden which we enjoyed eating our food out in. Only disappointment is that their website says they offer 20% off vegan food ‘every Monday’, but doesn’t clearly advertise that this doesn’t apply to bank holidays.

A gem of Winchester

They have a whole vegan menu with pub-favourites, such as lasagne, shepherds pie, etc. But the top dish IMO is the banana blossom fish and chips with tartar sauce. My partner and I come here for lunch almost every time we come to Winchester. Highly recommend!

Be very careful with allergies

We visited this pub as such good reviews on here for vegans. I was dying to try their banana blossom .There web page says specifically about vegan / gluten free.
I went with my son and I was the 1st to order, in front of an area that says to make staff aware of allergies!!
I said specifically I am vegan also gluten free. So can I order the vegan fish. I said also I like vegetables so ordered as an extra , £4.75.

Other dishes were ordered.

Pub started to empty out very few people sitting down or eating then.

We waited over 1 hour the food came .
I had chopped the fish and put a mouthful in my mouth chewing it and had to spit it out.
I smelt it and then other party members tried and said that is definitely fish.

I have had no meat or fish for 50 years.

I went with son to till to let them know. He said he would deal with it.

Apparently young girl at the till had not been listening to me..
Another older lady came immediately over to take it away. Asking me if I wanted the vegan fish now as I must be starving. I ordered the vegetable pie.

It appeared a few minutes later. But it was not pie. It was lentils, peppers and 1 mushroom in tomato sauce. So so bland no seasoning herbs, with a slab of gluten free jus roll pastry on the top that must have been microwaved.

The older lady came to check and I let her know I didn't like it. Also mentioned other dishes burgers being small ,etc.

Seasonal veg was loads of peas, 6 carrot circles and ,3 slivers of kale.

My son was given the exact amount paid back for my meal.

But the whole experience was spoilt by this

Pros: Pub appeared nice in the front area

Cons: Time to get good, Bland

Excellent pie

Good vegan options. Visited on a Sunday. They had a vegan roast option, but I went for the pie of the week with roast potatoes and veg cooked to perfection. The pie was lentil, mushroom and spinach with a puff pastry top. Delicious! Had the standard pie as opposed to the small. Nothing standard about the size - be warned!

Pros: Quality of the food, Atmosphere, Staff

Traditional pub with vegan pub classics

Nice pub and friendly staff.
I love the fact they have a whole menu of vegan food! My shepherdless pie was really tasty. Them didn't have spring rolls that day not lasagne but they have lots of other dishes. I fancied everything.
A shame I was in Winchester just for the weekend.

Pros: Extensive vegan menu, Board games , pool table, etc., Friendly service

Cons: Limited beer selection

Good vegan pub menu

Good sized portions. Simple traditional pub grub. Not expensive and good quality ingredients. I love the fish less finger sandwich, served in granary bread (always fresh and chunky).
Love dogs. We also had the burger - came with usual salad but also coleslaw and fresh tomato salsa with beautifully cooked chunky chips. Its just opposite the green which makes it do handy.

Full vegan pub menu

All the pub classics like pie and mash, lasagne, burgers and fish and chips, plus desserts! The barmaid was so nice too.
I didn't think I liked banana blossom fish but I must have just had a bad experience previously. And I'm also not normally a chip person but they were to die for. Wish I lived closer so I could try the homemade pie and crumble
