Several options on the menu

The chef was very accommodating to our request for vegan versions of the menu. Although, honestly, I think it is pretty easy to make Mexican food vegan. My family liked their vegan burritos and tacos. I was underwhelmed with my taco salad which just had a pile of lettuce, a pile of black beans, and salsa on the side. It is a decent option on an island with few vegan options.

AMAZING!

One of the best veggie tacos I’ve had! The hot sauces are too die for. Veggie tacos paired with the barbecue hot sauce are great!

Pros: Accommodating , Amazing veggie options , Friendly staff

Friendly Heartier Options in Vieques

We managed to snag a reservation our last night in Vieques. We are 3 vegans including my 15 year old son who eats like a lumber Jack and my 20 year old daughter who is a picky vegan eater. Daughter had rice, beans, flour tortillas, and guac. I had the veggie fajitas and a spicy Coqui margarita. As a Mexican, I have to say this is one of the best margaritas I’ve ever had! My son had 4 veggie tacos and veggie fajitas. Not kidding the boy can eat! My Omnivore husband had meat fajitas, we all shared several orders of guac, chips, and salsa.

Planning ahead: They’re open for dinner only. Make a res as far in advance as possible. I contacted them through messenger the same day initially and they gave me a number to text. The only reason we got a res was because of an omicron cancellation. Give your res in first name (they don’t use last names) and bring your vax card and mask .

Service: They take COVID seriously in Vieques. They don’t have critical care services or a hospital on the island. So they are super serious about verifying vax status at Coqui before they let you in the door. She also used hand sanitizer on all of us before we walked in. Upon entering you take a pic of the menu to make ordering contactless. We told the owner/greeter we were 3 vegans in the group and she told us all the options we had. Very friendly about it. Our server was super sweet and helpful. We kept ordering more guac and tortillas and my son ordered more tacos and she didn’t miss a beat! The chef came over multiple times to check on us. Server kept our waters refilled constantly.

Food: This was the heartiest meal we all had in PR. Also, while it’s a Mexican restaurant, the rice and beans are Caribbean style not Mexican . But they were yummy and vegan! All of us loved the food. Lots of veggies. The tortillas were not the best but I am super picky about tortillas.

Ambience: Very clean, festive, lively, and friendly. They have two bathrooms: one for short people and one for tall.

Pros: Welcoming of vegans , Friendly , Staff able to tell you which menu items are vegan

Cons: Must plan ahead with reservation

Great Food, Great Margaritas!

The best place we found during our stay on the island of Vieques! The expat owners were very friendly and welcoming, and the chef himself came out to discuss the vegan options on the menu - he even brought us a complimentary special vegan dessert to apologize for not having a fully vegan dessert item on the menu!

And of course, you have to go just to try their signature spicy margaritas.

If this place were vegan-only, I'd give it 5 stars.

Pros: Friendly staff, Great drinks, Knowledgeable about vegan options

Loved it!

This is definitely one of the best places we ate on Vieques. We heard it could get busy and we made reservations, however, when we got there, there was plenty of seating. But the place is small so reservations are probably a good idea, especially in season.

The owner pointed out vegan menu items we could get, and there was a large choice of items, from chips and salsa, to burritos, fajitas, and more. The owner also said she had celiac disease and noted that other than the chips (which are fried flour tortillas) and burritos, all menu items were gluten free as well. They will make anything for you with the ingredients they have.

We spoke at length with the owner, who told us the rice and beans are vegan (no chicken stick in the rice, and no lard or meat in the beans) and they cook with oil. She said you could easily leave off cheese or sour cream, and replace meat with vegetables. They are happy to make whatever you want.

We each had a burrito and it was huge - tons of food. You could probably share. Chips and salsa is fried flour tortilla chips which are yummy, with 3 types of salsas. We also got a margarita.

The place is known for their hot sauces (if you go to their regular web site, it only sells hot sauces - you won't even find info on the restaurant there). They have a couple dozen from mild to hot and most, if not all, are vegan. They can recommend some based on your preferences to try with your meal.

I'd definitely recommend eating here, as they can accommodate all different types of dietary preferences, and the food is excellent.
