Maybe the only place in Jackson! But it's awesome.
Read moreWas driving through the southern states and got tired of my sweet chili doritos. Couldn't find a menu online so I just called and asked what's vegan and awesome. Got portobello fries and a vegan chicken sandwich and a vegan jalapeno burger. All three items were great other than being a tiny bit too salty but totally manageable.

This is the biggest variety of vegan food in MS that I’m aware of. It is NOT normal to see this in Jackson especially so I’m SO grateful to have a local business looking out for us vegans!

Huge variety of vegan burgers - Edit
Almost every option on the menu can be made vegan, and some burgers are only vegan. Burgers are made with various house-made bean patties. I recommend the Abyssinian!

Long wait, good food - Edit
I was excited by all the options available on the menu. I called in to order and many things weren’t available. I was told my order would be ready in 25 mins. When I arrived 30 mins later the order wasn’t ready. 40 mins later my food came out. I checked my bag and something was missing. It took another 10 mins for that to come out. The food was average but an hour and twenty minute wait for two sandwiches and fries is not worth it.

I never thought I would find a restaurant in Jackson, Mississippi that not only offered vegan comfort food but has a huge menu! Salads, shrimp, chicken, ribs, burgers , wings , Mac and Cheeze, Caribbean food, African food you name it , you can find it here. They have five brands of vegan cheese and a lot of of vegan "meat" including herbivores butcher. It's located in a strip mall and may not have the "typical vegan look" but it's definitely a not so hidden gem in the vegan community.

Order ahead of time. There were only about six people in the store when I walked and everyone had been disgruntled about the long wait. 45 minutes later I received my order of a burger and cauliflower chicken. I stopped here because I had wanted to go try their vegan jumbo shrimp but they were out of that, plantains and the next 3 items that I ordered.

I had the best burger here I’ve ever had in my life. Their menu is extensive and has some pretty wild vegan and vegetarian alternatives. We’re talking Impossible Meats, chicken, seafood—the whole nine yards. The staff are good folks. If you’re in the Jackson area, give it a try.

This place looks very rustic, no doubt about that, but the service is fantastic. Very helpful and sincere and generous. The menu for vegans and veggies is extensive. I didn't realise it wasn't a fully vegan / veggie restaurant actually. The portions are quite small by American standards but very manageable for those of us from other parts of the world so I didn't feel silly ordering more than one of their tempting side dishes. I would definitely come here again if I find myself in Jackson again.

These were the best vegan wings/wings on general I have had. The vegan shrimp were a little bit salty but the burger was delicious. My sister said the bigger shrimp are less salty but the small one I had wasn't.

We were on our way back from Gulf Shores and saw this listed on happy cow. I decided to check out their menu online and when I did I knew we were eating dinner there. I’m so glad we did. Everything we tried was amazing and we even ordered more after our original order. Make sure you ask if they have fried Oreos, and get you some!!

We rolled in on a road trip from New York to New Orleans and a Jackson local told us that everyone in our crew, from the omnivores to the vegans would be well served at Cool Al's. That turned out to be an understatement. This was the best meal we've had in days and we've been everywhere from Philly to Pittsburgh to Columbus to Nashville. We all ordered different things, but the tots and fries were exquisitely seasoned, the portabella fries were a table favorite, and we basically licked our plates clean after our sandwiches. Highly, highly recommended.

Passing through Jackson so stopped by for a late dinner. They had a complete vegan menu in a classic southern style. I ordered the blue plate special and the nice guy at the counter suggested a side of v-sausage, v-shrimp and corn all in a mix, it was chock full of the meat substitutes. Also had collard greens, BBQ ribbs, mac and cheeze, all well spiced and tasty. This restaurant has a significant focus on vegan food; I had the impression that the meat dishes were the afterthought. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and felt like a part of the community. One should know that this is what is typically refered to as a dive restaurant, and could do with some better lighting and some cleaning. I felt the food was prepared with care and that was the focus, so much so, it took too long given the oders are placed at the counter. With those negative comments, I want to make the point that I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and loved the food.

BEST VEGAN FOOD EVER - Edit
This was the best vegan meal I’ve ever had. Had the Cajun bleu cheese burger with an impossible burger patty. Incredible. The vegan bleu cheese was amazing and I believe made in house. I also got wings with Al’s special sauce and some hot wings. Both were incredible. Finally I got some truffle fries as well and dipped em in their special sauce. Unreal. There was a tiny bit of a wait but I don’t know what people expect when you’re getting such amazing food. All the staff was amazingly friendly too.

There may be non-vegan stuff there, but I saw only vegan foods promoted, and it all sounded delicious! Not everything was available the day I was there, but the fried chicken was outstanding! We had collard greens, old school mac and cheese, and gumbo, and it was all delicious. We were only passing through Jackson, so that is probably my last chance at Cool Al's, unfortunately.

Our family is from Chicago, my wife family has land here in Mississippi.
So we were looking for a place with vegan options and it's slim pickings in Mississippi.
This place was a huge surprise!
It's not completely vegan but EVERY beef burger they have can be made vegan/vegetarian and they have some burgers that are ONLY vegan/vegetarian like the Caribbean burger and the west African.
I had both, and both we're completely off the chain! Check this place out you won't regret it!

Here’s what we had: southern fried chicken (cauliflower), large side salad, and the blue plate special with seitan fried chicken and 3 vegan sides of mac-n-cheese, fried green tomatoes and candied yams. Much of this, of course, was fried so can’t speak to how healthy it was, but it tasted great. Loved both types of the fried chicken. The salad was excellent, as was the max-n-cheese. The “candied” yams were too sweet for my taste. Atmosphere was pretty raw, but great service.

Stop by travel through town and the food was great! I had the chicken and waffles. I would have given a 5 but they were really slow. It got crowd with take out orders so I'm not sure if that had any thing to do with it.

HC won't let me rate 5 star since this place also serves meat but don't be fooled, this place is 5 star for vegan. We sat down and literally ordered a second meal here in one sitting. Menu is gigantic and food is amazing. True vegan junk/comfort food. The stuffed burgers are really unique and delicious. We were only passing through Jackson on a road trip but considering moving here so we can have Als everyday!
