Serves meat, vegan options available. Comunn Eachdraidh Nis (CEN) was established in 1977 when the need for a facility to collect and preserve local history was realised. The cafe here offers vegan cheese and veggie options for sandwiches, free drinking water and refills. Soup of the day is vegetarian and usually dairy-free. Has oat and soya milk for coffee. Open Mon-Fri 10:00-16:00.

Lovely! - Edit
Lovely wee place with a gift shop and little museum. I had an oat latte here and a vegan cheese and tomato toastie. Was delighted to be able to get vegan cheese! They also had 2 vegan soups on the menu. With the toastie, they ask you if you want the coleslaw (non vegan), crisps and side salad so as to reduce waste. Lots of lovely cakes in the display cabinet but none were vegan. They did give us that ol' chestnut "they're gluten free though!!!".

Pros: Vegan cheese , Lovely staff , Choice of non dairy milks
Cons: No vegan cake!

Tasty food and a lovely, friendly, community atmosphere - Edit
I was in Ness for three weeks and ate lunch regularly in the cafe at Comunn Eachdraidh Nis ("Ness Historical Society" in Gaelic/Gàidhlig) during this time. Good coffee, amazing food, and the best atmosphere! Chef Catherine's soups of the day are some of the best and the homemade red onion chutney is delicious! Bread for the sandwiches comes from the local Blackhouse Bakery in Stornoway. There's also a daily selection of homebakes, which often includes gluten free and they're looking into vegan cake options.
Read moreAdditionally, the building contains a shop selling local products, a lovely museum with exhibitions telling the story of Ness's local history, and a well stocked archive containing historical records from the area. Comunn Eachdraidh Nis is a true community hub, taking pride in the area's bilingual nature and native language of Gàidhlig - which you will find spoken and written on signs throughout the building alongside English. Well worth a visit! Tòrr ghaol air an àite sònraichte seo. Dìreach sgoinneil!
