Upper Crust - Edit

A decent eatery run by the well intentioned in the city church. Probably the first of the new style trendy cafes in Belfast when opened.
No evangelism present - I think these guys are a charismatic crowd, but not Calvinistic (no "total depravity" stuff, focus on sharing Gods love instead, ya dig), but cafe secular in aspect.
As other great places have popped up, within walking distance, the sheen has came off here a bit for me. Used to be a real treat for me, nipping out when working for the nearby evildoing Simon community.

Coffee decent, drinking vessels were at one stage all unique pottery but I think have mostly gone to heaven.

Suspended coffee and suspended soup are offered for those who can't pay, (someone else has paid).

For first few years vegan option non existant, a modified version of veggie "yum bowl" offered instead, which did the job OK but wasn't great. More offered as veganism gets more popular.
Wait times can be long at peak lunchtimes too.

Worth your time and certainly a noble endeavor, nice guys and decent all round.

OK - Edit

Quick review!
Coffee is OK. About a standard offering.
Their menu is very limited - soup, which may / may not be veggie or vegan, and changes frequently.
Their old "yumble bowl" - a vegan bowl - seemed to me to be what you'd be given in a Siberian prison. Not good!
All in all, a very standard cafe. I must add that it was Christian based (if it still is, I have no idea) because some people don't like Christianity now.
It's also in the heart of the "Holylands" where students and others of life's vagrants live.

Pros: Standard

Cons: Not good selection

Lovely coffee and food... - Edit

Lovely coffee and food in Common Grounds. Opted for an Americano and veg, feta and almond panini on my last visit - very tasty. Have had the yumm bowl and various sandwiches in the past - food has always been really good and fresh. Good veggie options. Very relaxed feel to the place - it's all comfy sofas, rickety wooden tables and great music playing. Staff are lovely and there's often interesting art hanging on the walls. A place you could easily spend a few hours lounging in. It's also fair trade and not for profit which is wonderful. A coffee shop with real heart and soul - a welcome change to all the bland corporate chains out there.
