Hon machi 13-243-1, Higayashiyama-Ku, Tofukuji, Kyoto, Japan

Serves meat, vegan options available. Organic cafe in Tofukuji, outside the JR station on main road to Daihonzan Tofukuji temple. It's a food option for temple & garden day trippers. On the menu are vegan suitable items: a bibimbap with sticky rice. Has organic coffees & teas, toast plates, cake and parfait with green tea - possibly with dairy/egg. NOTE: May use fish in miso soup. Please confirm and inform HappyCow. Reported closed, Feb 2018.

closed? moved? couldn't find it - Edit

Tried to visit but it was not at the location listed on happy cow. Perhaps it is only open in peak tourist months? 20/02/2018

Cons: not there, couldn't find

Not really very veg-friendly at all - Edit

A nice little spot in a good location, we stopped by here when we had not many other options and were in a rush. We came away puzzled as to why they made it onto Happycow.. This really isn't a veg destination. The staff were pretty clueless about vegetarianism. The miso soup contains fish although you'll need to speak Japanese to find that out as Japanese often don't count fish as meat. They can't omit it for you either. The bibimbap was just regular... they'll remove the egg for you but won't add more veges so essentially you're eating a bowl of rice with a few streaks of veges on top. Tasty yes, but hardly nutritious and not better than what you'd get anywhere else. Desserts contain eggs and dairy - they don't even have soy milk on hand. Two points for being organic but unless you're stuck I'd go elsewhere.

Pros: organic, location near station

Cons: not really veg friendly

Friendly organic cafe - Edit

Location: On the main road about 2 minutes walk from the JR railway station in Tofukuji. Turn right when leaving the station, and you'll pass it on the way to the Tofukuji temple. The cafe is on the ground floor of a renovated traditional wood house, and has large signs/chalkboards on the street "Organic Cafe Cocohana."

Food: This Korean-style menu had a choice of two vegetarian rice bowl lunch sets, which were made vegan for us by omitting the eggs. The bibimbap, served in a sizzling hot platter, was delicious and full of veggies over sticky rice. Service was amazingly quick, and there is a picture menu with English captions, though no detailed descriptions of the dishes. Several types of coffee, tea and cake on the menu (as well as non-veg meals) and the mysterious "formed green tea" drink-desserts. I didn't try them, but they looked interesting.

Seating is at Western- style tables or tatami.

Pros: Easy to find, Moderate price , Friendly staff, understands veg requests
