Quick & tasty pure-veg curry in Chungyo Dept. store food court

CoCo curry house is a Japanese international chain restaurant serving almost exclusively Japanese-style curry with a small selection of side-dishes & desserts.

You can find CoCo Curry in the food court on the B3 level of Chungyo department store, directly adjacent to the central seating area.

The ordering process is online via QR code, and you can sit either in the restaurant (a waiter will seat you) or in the food court area where bench-tables are shared by customers of different outlets. The food court seating is a good option if you’re accompanied by non-vegetarians who aren't very accommodating because everyone can pick their own restaurant and re-convene in the seating area (There are other veg options around the food court too).

The menu is generally simple & easy to understand, there are English translations for every dish and vegetarian food is clearly labelled… in Mandarin - non-native readers may have to use a translation app or ask a member of staff because I couldn’t see an English key for the dietary labels, although once you’ve figured it out it’s easy to remember as they’re colour coded.

The ‘Vegetarian’ menu page is ‘pure veg’ (素 / 素食) (& thus also vegan), except for the omurice and cheese curry which are specifically labelled as 蛋素 (ovo-vegetarian) & 奶素 (lacto-vegetarian). I would stick to this section as some ‘vegetable’ curries have meat in the gravy - always check the dietary label ;)

I opted for the tomato & broccoli omu-rice with extra eggplant topping, and also got a drink & dessert using one of the meal-combo deals - I paid $355 (which is about £8.90).

Japanese food has a reputation for being less spicy than other Asian countries so I wasn’t sure what to expect and opted for a safe level 2 spicy out of 5. It was about as hot as I would want a casual lunch to be, and more spicy than an extra hot S&B Golden Curry - so keep that in mind if you’re trying to gauge the level of heat by comparison to store-bought curry paste.

Unfortunately there were no vegan desserts, but there are options for ovo-lacto vegetarians.

The service was super quick, and the waiters paid attention to the table, bringing the desserts soon after we finished, but they didn’t make us feel rushed at all.

The company website helpfully has details about the veg*n choices in a Q&A section here: https://www.ichibanya.com.tw/web/qa/qa.jsp?dm_no=DM1589970044874

You can also order delivery via Food Panda.
