Upscale Mexican Food

I love all of the vegan options at Cocina de Barrio. The happy hour specials (Mushroom Tacos and Coconut Augachile) are an especially good value and very delicious. I always order one of each. Plus you can't beat the happy hour margaritas. I highly recommend it!

Pros: Great Presentation

Cons: No Chips and Salsa

Fantastic and well priced

I had the vegan tostaditas with the Agua Santa: $30 for a cocktail and dinner. Service was fast, very nice, and everything tasted amazing. Many unique options as well.

Very happily surprised

We came here for a birthday celebration and I honestly didn’t even look the place up. I wasn’t expecting much since my plan was to go elsewhere for lunch but WOW!! We ordered the young coconut aguachile and that was great, my husband got the barrio salad which he liked.
We also asked the server if she had any other vegan brunch recommendations and she was actually vegan herself so she had the kitchen make some vegan green chilaquiles with soy rizo and that was amazing!

My friend and I took advantage of the bottomless mimosas for $20 and my hubby and brother had some other great margarita choices.

I noticed that their dinner menu has even more vegan options so we definitely plan to come back for those.

Pros: Delicious vegan options

Cons: A little pricey

Not For Me

I am not a very picky person (as you can see from previous reviews), however, this is one of my least favorite meals. I ordered the coconut aguachiles, mushroom tinga, and mushroom quesadilla. The aguachiles had virtually no flavor, and really needed salt and lime. Honestly, it didn’t taste anything like I remembered. The mushroom quesadilla came on a sauce that I just personally did not enjoy. The mushroom tinga was the best dish of the night, but again it wasn’t mind blowing.

There are so many better vegan options in Hillcrest and San Diego, I just would not recommend choosing this place unless someone non veg really wanted to come. The food unfortunately doesn’t taste nearly as good as it looks. The service is also spotty. The person offering water and cleaning the tables was very kind, the waiter was not rude but not friendly either.

Side note: my family ordered the non veg menu and also did not enjoy their food.

Delicious vegan options except no vegan desserts

We went here for husband’s birthday. We shared 3 dishes and they were all delicious. Unfortunately this restaurant doesn’t have any vegan desserts.

Pros: Clearly labeled delicious vegan options, Variety to choose from , Nice ambiance

Cons: No vegan dessert options
