Great food, huge portions, and lovely owners! - Edit
We ate here three times during our stay because it was so close to our hotel. The location is very central and convenient. The owners are incredibly nice and welcoming. On top of that, the food is very affordable and the portions are quite large. The dishes are not heavily seasoned, which makes it a great choice if you prefer a milder taste. Highly recommended!

Cons: No pictures to chose the food, Low seasoned dishes

Wish I had come sooner! - Edit
I have been really struggling with finding good vegan food whilst in Shanghai, and now on my final day I have tried this place. I really wish I had come sooner!!
Read moreA fully vegan menu with so much choice and it is so affordable! (For 2 mains and 1 side it came to 60 yuan). The staff were super friendly and showed us pictures of everything on the menu to help us decide what to order because me and my partner were overwhelmed with all of the choice as we have not been used to this in China at all.
Such a great, central location. Located on floor 3 of the First Shanghai Foodhall right at the back

Cheap, fast, simple - Edit
Easy to find inside the First Food Hall, on the 3rd floor. The place has a sign "vegan" next to its Chinese name. Food came fast and was simple, but practical. Flavor was not bad, but also not the 8th wonder of the world. In an emergency it plays its part. We got free tea in can and soup with mushrooms. Very central, 100% vegan, with nice and friendly staff. The flavor is not the best, but also far from being the worst one.

Tasty, cheap, fast - Edit
The place is located on 3F of a huge food mall. I had no trouble finding it but there's no way to navigate directly to it so some people might.
Read moreThe food came out nice and hot. Only took about 10 minutes from ordering. I got the 五彩手工水饺 and麻婆豆腐. Neither were exploding with flavor or spice, so if that's what you're looking for, it might not be for you. But I'm not picky at all, especially in china where finding vegan food is insanely difficult.
The woman working the register came over and brought me some freebies (a can of jasmine tea and a small bowl of soup) which was very nice.
Overall a really decent place if you want some cheap dumplings in your belly.

Ok ish - Edit
Thanks to the previous reviewers who gave great instructions on how to find the place. Very pleased to find it without trouble.
Read moreThis is a stall in a food hall. You order the food and sit at a table in the communal area. This is handy because if you don't like a dish, when you clear your dishes , you just put them on a communal trolley and so don't risk offending the lovely staff who work at Clean Water.
I had the chicken nuggets hot. They came out as what I would call chicken patties and did not look like nuggets to me. From reading previous reviews, I should have ordered them cold to get them more nugget like.
I had the back pepper steak and rice. It was ok. Some bowls of soup and veggies were also brought out, I think as a gift. They weren't to my taste unfortunately.
This is very basic Chinese vegan food and is quite cheap so I can't complain. I am just grateful to have had something vegan when I have found it hard to find the vegan places to eat at in Shanghai. I can't say I enjoyed the food that much though..
The staff are lovely.
Pros: Easy to find thanks to previous reviewers, cheap, nice staff
Cons: not great food, at least it is vegan

Lovely little vegan restaurant - Edit
On (East) Nanjing Road look for the building that says Shanghai First FOODHALL. Two escalators up to F3, walk to the back and there’s this restaurant as part of a food court. While the other restaurants seem to draw much more traffic with the meat loving clients, this little restaurant is really charming. Especially for its nice owner. There seems to be 4 women working, but the smallest of them seems to manage it all. She’s very happy to help you although the communication is a bit difficult. The food is simple but nice. Good for a quick lunch or not too fancy diner. You pick your own fresh vegetables and tofu products for stir fry or hot pot. We loved the vegan ‘pepper steak. The mock chicken that look like chicken nuggets are a cold dish. There’s more to choose from on the English menu. If you like you can do take away as well or ask her to pack what you can’t finish. 10 stars for going above and beyond to help and please her clients. I believe all in all it’s an honest Chinese vegan cuisine, not a high level cuisine.

Pros: Everything is vegan, The owner, You’re not a number but a valued visitor

Please keep in mind: the entrance of the food mall is at the Nanjing (pedestrian) road. You take 2 escalators up to 3F and then walk all the way to the back. That’s where the marker is positioned. Don’t try to enter the building from that side…

Avoid this place - Edit
Unfortunately, I have to agree with the negative comments here. I’m not someone who often writes negative reviews but we had quite a bad experience. The positive aspects first: friendly staff, all vegan, some free extras (but I will get back to that point in the negatives).
Read moreWe ordered just some snacks like the vegetable skewers and waited for 30 min even though we were the only customers at that time. After we got the food, a Meituan driver arrived to pick up some dishes but they were not ready yet (this poor guy was still sitting there -first time for me to see a Meituan driver sitting down- 10 min later when we left. Not only was the food preparation slow but also just microwaved. The vegetables on the skewer were still raw (except for one non-identifiable vegetable that ‘died’ -see photo). We got also two free pastries in little bags that were already opened. My pastry was stale but even worse my partner’s had a bite already taken out of it. We would recommend to stay away from here and rather take a DiDi to any other vegan place.

Hot pots - Edit
Went there on my first night in China, it was a few minutes to closing and I didn’t know my way around a hotpot. But it gets 4 stars purely from how helpful and patient the person serving me was. Also probably the only restaurant I tried in Shanghai where I could eat something else then oily and deep fried.

Sans saveur - Edit
Je rejoins certains commentaires. Les plats sont sans saveur. Riz non assaisonné et plat au curry sans goût. Par contre oui il y a bien de l'eau 😅

Shang-bye! - Edit
We’ve had some incredible vegan food in China - it was not here. They didn’t have any noodle dishes available, so we settled for the ‘black pepper steak and rice’ with ‘curried potatoes and rice’. We then waited 30 minutes for 2 steaks and some plain rice, and some undercooked potatoes and carrots in a very weak curry flavoured sauce. 3* for being a vegan restaurant in a non vegan country. It’ll help if you’re hungry and on Nanjing street; otherwise reluctantly wouldn’t recommend. 😕

Decent food to curb your hunger - Edit
Once again, I might ordered wrongly. Should have tried the mala soup, definitely more flavourful than the Sixi Kaofumian i ordered. Wanton soup was ok, comes in 16.

Not the best rice restaurant at all - Edit
The place was a bit unclean, but the staff were friendly and provided an English menu. The mushroom rice was overcooked, almost like porridge, and lacked flavor. The vegetable rice my wife ordered was also bland and unappetizing. Both soups tasted like hospital food. The only good note was the free fruit, but even that was not fresh. Overall, not a place we’d recommend. Take a Didi and go to lotus vegan!!!!

Great find - Edit
Tucked away on the 3rd floor of the foodhall- you wouldn’t find it by accident. Great choice of vegan dishes. Everything we had was very tasty. The staff were super friendly and helpful. We spent 75rmb on three dishes and both of us were very full.

Lovely people and lovely food (in Shanghai First Food Court, 3rd floor) - Edit
On the third floor of the Shanghai First food court, toward the back. Lovely people who can suggest the vegan food on the menu. We don’t speak Mandarin but we spoke through a Translate app and the person was so kind and helpful.

Warm Hospitality & Amazing Vegan Food - Edit
A lovely vegan spot focused on soups and noodles. The staff is super friendly and helpful, even though there’s no English menu. I had no idea what I was eating, but it was incredible – great meat substitutes and a pleasantly mild taste. Loved it!

Amazing!! - Edit
Located on level 3 of the Shanghai first food hall. Walk directly straight when getting off the escalator. The food was so yum and all vegan (as far as I could see). The lady was so lovely and helpful even though we had to use google translate. Also super cheap. Confirmed by the owner to open at 10am.
