Best Indian in Austin

Perhaps not the most authentic place for Indian, but it's delicious nonetheless. The samosas are great. They know what vegan means, too, and have even started to label such items on the menu.

The atmosphere is nice, for dressy-ish or casual occassions. Like another reviewer said, though, it does get quite noisy, so i may not be the perfect date place.

Pros: Good Indian, Pretty vegan-friendly, Nice atmosphere

Cons: Noisy, Serves meat, Somewhat expensive

Great Indian food

I went here because it was very close to my hotel. I’m so glad I did! The food was great, the staff were very kind, and the story about the building was very cool.

Pros: Labeled vegan options

Must go

This place is poppin (yes, even on a Monday), so be sure to grab a reservation or cross your fingers and hope there is a free spot at the bar (granted that is what we did). We got the vegan pakoras, vegan samosas, batata cham, roti, bhindi masala, and aloo gobi. It was a feast to say the least, and everything was delicious. We got the spice level 2, and it had a nice bite to it without being too spicy. For dessert they had a vegan chocolate cake, so, of course, we had to indulge. This place came by recommendation from a friend, so take this review as yours.

Pros: Lots of vegan options (even dessert!), Reasonable prices, Cool vibe

Cons: Very busy

Excellent

I got the Aloo Ghobi with high spice, and it was terrific. Super filling and yummy. The veggie samosas were good as well. My server was vegetarian, so she gave excellent recommendations for what to get, and they had a vegan chocolate cake!

Good lunch option

I went here recently with a group from work for lunch. The vegan option in the buffet was Aloo Gobi and jasmine rice. I wasn’t in the mood for that so I ordered the vegetable ayam from the menu, which was tasty. I appreciated having more than one option but it would be better if the naan bread was vegan too.

This place sucks

The service was horrible and the food was super bland.

I showed up by myself when the restaurant was about half empty and was told I can only be seated at the bar because I’m by myself. I would understand this if they were busy and really needed the tables but whatever.

The server then proceeds to take my order immediately after I sat down. I asked for a drink but he hovered over me and when I looked up, he asked what I wanted to order. I said I wasn’t ready since I haven’t read the menu yet but he then asked for my credit card before I’ve even given him my order. He said he’s opening a tab which doesn’t make sense at all since I obviously went there to eat and not just drink. I should’ve cut my losses and left tbh. But I unfortunately stayed.

I ordered a Bhel puri (which was mostly rice puffs with the sweetest chutney that definitely came out of a pouch) and a tikka masala curry (which came with mostly paneer and very few veggies in the blandest sauce imaginable). I asked for my food to be 8/10 spicy. It was not even on the scale.

There is literally nothing that redeemed this place for me. Even the ambience wasn’t great. I had to carry my own food to eat in their outdoor area.

Worst $30 I’ve spent on a dinner ever.

Pros: Typical Indian vegan/vegeterian dishes

Cons: Horrible service , Bland Food, Cheesecake Factory but Indian

Good food and atmosphere

Nice spot with many vegan options. The tomato cucumber salad was great, fresh, crisp and enough for two people. Bhindi masala was good not great, I ordered hot and it came pretty mild. Very good service and atmosphere. Unfortunately single diners can't order full dinner at the bar but table service was very good.

Pros: lots of vegan options, reasonable prices

Cons: "hot" wasn't at all spicy

Kind of pricey but excellent food and service. Best vegetable samosas in Austin! Loads of parking across the street.

Awesome decor, ambiance, and food

Looking for a place to have a nice dinner downtown? This is it! Plenty of vegan options, the staff is fantastic, and the food is delicious! Definitely worth the wait if there is one. Call ahead for reservations if you don't want to wait. Try to get a seat down in the cellar as it's very romantic.

Vegan items marked, very fancy for the price

Absolutely delicious, and it seems way fancier than the price. Vegan foods were clearly marked (this is just my favorite thing in the world world as an introvert). We had plenty of leftovers with an appetizer, bread, and 2 entrees for 2 people. I hear the basement is really cool and everyone says to go there on a date night.

Pros: Very fancy for the price, Big portions

The Lunch Buffet Rocks!

I've come here a handful of times and always for the weekday lunch buffet. Otherwise, I feel that the items can get somewhat pricey, but the buffet makes up for it at only around $8 per person. As a vegetarian, you'll get 2 main entrees as well as the salad bar and the dessert, which is more than enough for me, as well as your naan. Perhaps one thing I'm sad about is that they never offer my favorite Indian curry (saag/palak paneer) at the buffet bar, but it is a buffet so I'm not going to complain - or at least they never do when I go. The food is pretty good, the waitstaff friendly, and the place is more on the sophisticated side, but it's perfect for both business meals and casual meet ups alike. However, it can get pretty loud.

Either way, it's a great place to go to for a quick Indian fix in the middle of the week.

Pros: friendly staff, great lunch buffet, clean

Cons: loud

No thanks.

This is the biggest Indian restaurant that I've ever seen. I love the looks of the place - especially downstairs. It was very crowded. I had to wait in line, which lead me to believe that I was in for a real treat. After soup, an appetizer, and a meal, I have no idea why it's so popular. It can't be the food.

I have eaten in many Indian restaurants all over the U.S. and Canada. It's my favorite food, but not at this place.

mmm.. samosas...

Clay Pit is probably one of my favorite Indian eateries in Austin! While it's not 100% vegetarian, there is a decently sized (and marked!) vegetarian section, and NOTHING I've had out of the many dishes has been bad (so far!). Naan is a little bit extra, but well worth it as well. I would definately reccommend sharing family-style with a few people.

I've always had polite servers and overall enjoy the atmosphere, although it can get a little loud when crowded. It also can get a little pricey with wine and whatnot, but nothing too bad. :)

Pros: delicious food, decent amount of vegetarian options, nice wine selection

Cons: can be loud, limited parking

Lunch buffet rocks sophisticatedly!

I had my 40th birthday party here, at the banquet table in the private stonewalled room, and it was spectacular. Pre-planning the group menu ($19 per person price fixe) was easy to arrange with the owner, and on the big night the service was excellent, food exquisite, served family style with much passing around of tasty bowls and platters. We were even kindly offered the downstairs room to put some music on and dance. The weekday lunch buffet is a great central location to meet up with friends, and the most economical way to experience the Clay Pit, at $7.95 (with two vegetarian entrees). Evening suppers are great for romantic rendevous and general downtown celebrations, though it can get pricey fast. Be in the mood for a big city vibe when at the Clay Pit, because with the open space and peppy jazz music, it's often very noisy. Go someplace else if you're needing a small and quiet nook. My godmother won't meet me there because it can be so hard to hear each other talk!

Pros: excellent service, gorgeous decor, tree of life mural

Cons: evening wait: 30-45 min., metered lunch parking
