Best Vegan Brunch in SF - Edit

We love Citizen Fox. The food is fantastic and the staff is thoughtful, accommodating and attentive. My personal favs are the benedict, "chicken & waffles", the brussels side and the smoked potatoes with Just Mayo.

Pros: great ambiance

Excellent Service and Food - Edit

Located in a beautiful space on a slightly gritty Mission block, Citizen Fox is a great addition to the SF vegan food scene. This is be a terrific place to take omnivores.

The service was terrific. Our server, Michael, was wonderful and completely patient with our many questions and requests. The manager/host also dropped by our table a time or two to see all was well.

The food--mushroom cheese burger, Brussels sprouts, cheesecake, fries--were all delicious. The only less-than-stellar food was the buffalo wings. The sauce was great but the seitan (or whatever the insides were made of) had an unpleasant mushiness. The drinks were very strong.

All in all--the best vegan restaurant in SF that I know!

Pros: great food, great service, full bar

Cons: somewhat seedy neighborhood

Definite great potential - Edit

We joined this very hip, bustling Mission neighborhood spot for dinner and really enjoyed it. Very friendly staff, sleek, artsy interior and creative menu make it a stand-out among the all-vegan restaurants in SF. We had the butter bean bruschetta (outstanding), popcorn soup (bizzarely very tasty but a touch too sweet), brussel sprouts (very good), fried "chicken" tempeh (hearty, nice flavors but a little on the salty side), and the burger (probably the best vegan burger I've ever had!). Portions are big--we ended up with more food than the two of us could eat. We were excited to hear that they are expanding to 5 days a week in December (currently only Fri dinner and Sun brunch), and they are taking over a prominent corner on Mission St in 2016. We will definitely be back!

Pros: best vegan burger ever, very cool space--a real night out, big portions

Cons: some items still need some tweaking, menu is somewhat limited--4 entrees, parking is very tight if you drive

Fun new vegan upscale American classics - Edit

Citizen Fox is a bar and restaurant that is supposed to be opening in a permanent location soon, but for now is doing some events and is open for pop-ups on Friday nights and Sunday mornings in a temporary location near the permanent home in the Mission. The temporary location is actually a really nice restaurant space, with beautiful wood interior, full bar, ~5 booths and 2 long communal tables for seating, and an open kitchen.

I've seen Citizen Fox at some other events such as the Streat Food Park's Vegan Sundays, and the food then was not super impressive. I have also heard that at one such occasion, they bought non-vegan bread and served it to vegan customers without informing them, which is not cool.

However, when I went to their pop-up location for a Sunday brunch, the food was really good. It was upscale in the sense of being carefully prepared, well-balanced and a lot of effort put into the cooking. The environment was casual though -- we were seated on stools next to other diners. We got drinks which I felt was not good value, a very tiny mimosa (half a champagne glass full) for $8 if I remember correctly. Also, I would not recommend the package prix fixe that you can buy ahead of time, it didn't seem to be a good value compared to just ordering off the menu.

I recommend you go to a pop-up for the food! Be prepared to sit quite close to strangers; it'll be worth it.

4 stars for now -- hoping to upgrade to 5 once the location/hours/etc settles.

Pros: Great food, can't get elsewhere, Beautiful space

Cons: Packages and drinks poor value
