古城慈缘斋素食馆, at 大理市古城一塔路19号, is a vegan Buddhist buffet within a 25-room guesthouse called Ya Song Home Inn. Located just outside Dali Old Town South Gate. Now run as a free of charge social service (donations accepted). Recommended to visit with a Mandarin speaker as specific rules apply, including 1. go to the food counter before taking a seat, 2. only take food you will eat without leaving ANY on your plate, 3. move plate to the serving dish when serving (ie. don't bring the serving spoon away from the serving dish risking spillage on the counter), 4. pour water on plate and drink after eating, 5. avoid talking in the dining area. MARCH 2018 NOTE: maybe closed/shut down - please verify and let HappyCow know.

Ci Yuan Zhai, Dali - Edit
I went this evening with my Chinese co-diner. It was very different to the info in the blurb and that in the previous review (I have just made a submission for the listing blurb to be updated).
Read more* it is now run as a free of choice social service
* its all vegan, buffet only
Rules include:-
* go to the food counter before taking a seat
* only take food you will eat without leaving ANY on your plate
* move plate to the serving dish when serving (ie don't bring the serving spoon away from the serving dish risking spillage on the counter)
* pour water on plate and drink after eating
* avoid talking in the dining area
Not best choice for anyone without a Mandarin speaker in their group. What they do as a social service is admirable.
Pros: All vegan, Free of charge social service
Cons: Lots of rules, Risky for the unaware to make a faux pas

Best one in Dali - Edit
For me the best vegetarian (vegan) restaurant in Dali Old Town.
Read moreThe family that runs it are very nice and friendly.
The menu is very extensive and everything I tried tastes very good.
Most of the dishes are vegan except a few that have milk or egg. Be clear about that when you order if you are vegan.
I think is better to go 3 or more so you can try many different dishes.
It's a two-floor restaurant just outside Old Town from the South side walking on BoAiLu, just up the hill for 100 meters (YiTaLu).
Pros: great food, very nice staff, good quality-price
Cons: sometimes not clear with no-vegan dishes
