Great Vegan Pho!

The vegan pho here is filling and has both tofu and seitan 😍. Tastes amazing. Lot of vegan options with tofu, tempeh, or seitan. Love when places offer seitan

Pros: Lots of variety, Tofu, tempeh, and seitan options, Filling

Home of my favorite meal ever.

The General Tso’s fried tofu has been and likely will remain my favorite meal ever. It’s also the restaurant meal my non-vegan friends and family like the best. Is is the most authentic or gourmet meal? No. But it’s so comforting and reminds me of the battered, fried, and sauced chicken I used to love as a kid.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Owned by a lovely family, Scenic outdoor seating

Chop Stix Reigns Supreme

We've gone to Chop Stix for over 20 years. There are countless vegan options featuring tofu, tempeh, and seitan. Amazing sauces and fresh vegetables, all on beautiful Bivens Arm Lake. Our favorite restaurant in Gainesville, hands down.

Pros: Sauces, Tons of Vegan Options, Beautiful Setting

Cons: After 20 years, service is still weak, Not fully vegan

Many great vegan options

Been here several times while visiting my son. We've ordered the vegan options of Sweet and Sour Tofu, Honey Garlic Fried Tofu, Kang Masamon, Pad Thai, Crispy Veggie Rolls (they will omit the cream cheese), coconut sorbet, veggie spring rolls, and a sweet potato sushi with vegan eel sauce. The Kang Masamon was a little bland, but the others were wonderful. Great staff. And yes, the mosquitos come out at night!
Can't wait to come back to sample more vegan options here!

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Great service, Good portions

Overall a great option

This place has definitely been hit or miss for me, but overall I love it! The vegan pho is no debate the best I’ve ever had, can’t recommend it enough! I also got the cashew dish with tofu and that was amazing. I do recall getting some noodle dish (with some type of curry sauce) with seitan that was quite bland. I definitely recommend the pho and cashew one though! Also the view on the lake is amazing, but once the sun sets the mosquitos are unbearable (I’m a Florida native and I’ve never seen so many swarming) so keep that in mind. There are two full pages of veggie options (with tofu, tempeh, and seitan as protein) so be ready to have a hard time deciding!

Pros: Local place, Lots of options, Seitan!

Cons: Hit or miss, Mosquitos outside

Disappointing

We saw this restaurant on Happy Cow and were excited to find some good Thai food.

My husband and I ordered two different noodle bowls and they were very disappointing. They were both super bland and mediocre. The only sauce on mine was Mae Ploy sauce like you buy at the grocery store.

It's sad because the location on the lake is very cool. We have no desire to ever go back.

Pros: Location

Cons: Bland food

Variety.

One of the few places in town that truly understands a vegan diet. I am always asked if I want to omit animal product from vegetarian dishes (even when calling in orders). Do. be afraid to ask for mods. They do almost anything for you.

Probably the largest selection of veg sushi in now.

Hands down the best Pad Thai in town.

And an awesome patio view. There's always alligators in the lake.

Pros: Wide selection, Very accommodating , Delicious food

Cons: Wait time can be long

Veg options abundant

A cozy local restaurant aside an alligator lake with plenty of veg options. GET THE VEGAN PHO! The broth is housemade with savory mushrooms and root vegetables, and comes with tofu and tender seitan that fooled me into thinking I was given a non-veg dish. This is the best vegan pho in town.

Pros: Plenty of options, Nice atmosphere, Vegan pho!!!

Nice View

They have an extensive list of vegetarian items for around $11 each. We had the vegetarian Pad Thai without egg and the sweet and sour tofu. We also had a side of brown rice. It was great that he asked if we wanted egg before we had to ask. Both dishes were good.
We had a table outside with a view of the lake. It was cool to have an alligator swim by as we were eating.
The chairs were plastic. The service was slow.
Overall we give this place 3.5/5.

Pros: View of Lake, Server asked if we wanted vegan or vegetarian

Cons: Slow service

Best pad thai in town!

If you haven't tried their tofu pad thai or penang curry you must! Some of their other menu items are hit or miss, but I think that's because they try to have such a large menu when they should just stick to what they specialize in. Be sure to ask for no egg!

Pros: Amazing pad thai, Great penang curry, Beautiful lake view

Cons: Slow (especially at peak hours)

Can't wait to go back!

We stopped here before heading to the airport to return home. I wanted to stay in Gainesville just to keep eating at this place! It's so damn good!

The owner was very nice and she is very knowledgable about vegan food. They have so many options - tofu, seitan, tempeh and so many dishes that can be made vegan. We basically told her what kind of food we liked and she gave us each a few suggestions on things to try.

The food was off-the-charts good! We got plenty of food, the portions are large and we took some to go to eat while waiting for our flight.

If the weather permits, sit outside on the deck. It overlooks a lake and is very nice and peaceful. We went a little earlier in the day before lunch (11ish) and it wasn't busy at all, but it's a big place and can accommodate large groups.

You gotta try this place!

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Very knowledgable staff/owner, Great atmosphere on the lake

Cons: That I don't live in Gainesville

Vegan staple

I really love Chopstix. I've been in Gainesville for four years now, and this is one of my favorites. True, they can be very busy and sometimes slow, but if you're not in a rush, go. Like someone said, don't go if you're starving. It's in a great location, eat on the patio if it's not too hot/buggy out. As a vegan, I LOVE their General Tso's tofu, the sweet and sour tofu, or the Ap Chao tofu. Their peanut roll is also a favorite. They also deliver through a local company, so at least you can avoid the wait while at home!

Pros: Lots of veg options, Great view

Cons: Slow

Eat at Chop Stix at your own risk

I would never want to actually discourage someone from eating at Chop Stix, but if you are a vegetarian or vegan BE CAREFUL! I don't care for their food that much, and this statement from another reviewer, "Easily the best choice for veggies in Gainesville" is sheer nonsense.

No. Chop Stix may easily be the best choice for vegans and vegetarians who have a carnivore friend or relative visiting and they want to go somewhere where they can eat meat and a vegetarian or vegan can eat too, overlooking a beautiful lake...if you get my drift.

Just because I don't care for their food doesn't mean that you won't like it, so do try it. But if it is actually vegetables you want, go to Szezuan (spelling?) Panda on 13th. They serve meat but so does Chop Stix, and the Panda has a buffet that is much less expensive.

Chop Stix could be good if you are out on a date. But I have heard several horror stories about them serving meat to people who specifically ordered non-meat. My daughter was traumatized. WHY DON'T THEY GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER.

Pros: beautiful lake

Cons: may serve a vegetarian meat by mistake, may be drunk people, long, long, long wait

Great Food, Great View

Here are the things you need to know:

This place is great, so they are very popular and busy, so don't go in there if you're in a rush or starving. Sometimes the wait can be a LONG time, and that's just for the table. Then the service can take awhile. Also, the acoustics in the dining area suck, so the more people, the louder it gets. That said....

This place has a HUGE Vegan menu and the food is fantastic. For people from out of town, this place is a MUST. It's located on Bivens Lake, and it's a beautiful view. There's a good chance you'll even see an alligator while you wait for your table. They have a great drink selection (alcohol and non). Now the icing on the cake, the new Whiteberry. They always offer 1 Vegan frozen yogurt, 99 times out of 100 it will be Pomegranate, which tastes great AND is healthy when topped with fresh berries.

DO NOT let the negatives deter you. Just go when you have the time. They are a great vegan friendly restaurant.

Possibly the worst service in history

I was excited to try this place, an Asian Fusion cafe. First, we had to wait over 20 minutes to even order. I ordered the Pan Rammuat with rice. The food took a long time to come, but I can deal with that. Someone other than the original waiter brought the dishes out and didn't know what they were. As the only vegan in the group, I was getting really nervous. Also, the person didn't really speak English, so I was freaking out that I was going to get someone's meat dish (as my dish had seitan and I don't like how similar they look). Finally, I called over someone else from the restaurant to make sure it was seitan. Okay, good. However, it was supposed to come with rice, and they didn't bring it, they said they'd bring it out. I start to eat my dish without rice, as we've been there a long time and I'm the only one without my whole dish. 10 minutes pass, I ask someone else for my rice. Nothing. I have to ask 4 times for my rice, and it finally arrived at the end of the meal, when I was done eating. Wow, thanks.

Also, someone in our group ordered something to go when we initially ordered. When they bring out our checks (and have charged her for it), she asks where the to-go order is. They didn't make it. So, we get to wait another 20 minutes for that. Then, we go to pay, and there's one person trying to check out a line of 8 people. So, more waiting to pay. This was awful.

Even more fun: they charged an 18% gratuity for a table of 6. I've never heard of doing that for a table less than 8. Considering I didn't have rice for my meal or a refill on my water, I probably wouldn't have tipped 18%. I felt completely ripped off and just wanted to get the hell out of there.

In short, avoid this place like the plague. The prices aren't bad, but I don't even think I'd return to this place if they were giving the food away.

Cons: Terrible service, Don't even think about a refill, What rice?

Delicious and friendly

Food was excellent, and they're very veg friendly. I got a dish with seitan 'chicken' that was just delicious! Lovely view of the lake. I was a bit concerned to see 'frogs legs' on the menu, considering how endangered frogs are throughout the world. On my visit, restaurant was apparantly undergoing some renovation, and the AC wasn't working well. Great view of the lake.

Pros: vegan options, delicious, friendly staff

Cons: uncomfortable temperature , meat and frogs legs on menu
