Many vegan options

Many vegan proteins that can be substituted in many dishes. Huge menu, but some dishes lack description.

Food was good and plentiful, though the service was slow.

Dump, but the food is good

When I took my brother here, he said "I would have brought my waders if I knew we were going to a sh**hole." Not the nicest place, but the extensive vegan menu is great. Lots of faux meat choices that can substitute for any Chinese dish you can think of.

Cons: dumpy

Spend Your $$ Elsewhere

I had heard that this restaurant had a great selection of vegan asian foods. Too bad that none of the items on the menu were actually available! We were also not allowed to sit in what appeared to be the nicer areas of the restaurant. It seemed that half of the empty restuarant was "reserved" for special guests.

The vegan won-ton soup was recommended, but it was "not in stock", among other items on my "to-try" list.

We had faux pepper beef dish. It had good flavor, but the service was terrible. The waitress was rude, barely ever came to the table and over-charged our bill. It took way too many minutes of basic calculations for them to admit their error. Suffice to say, the experience was not relaxing or pleasurable. When we made the difficult decision to not leave a tip, the waitress chased us outside and attempted to demand one, albeit it not being legally required.

The food was not good enough to experience the headache of the terrible service and attitude of those working there. Will never go back again.

Pros: food edible

Cons: rude staff, poor atmosphere, many menu listed items not available

Terrible food, even worse service

My friend and I are both vegans and went to Chia Shang based on the reviews from this page, but the restaurant's food and service was absolutely not in sync with the other positive reviews posted (perhaps things have changed at Chia Shang during the past couple of years since those reviews were written). I don't think I've ever had a worse restaurant experience. The menu did not have descriptions as to what came with the meal, and our server, who was inattentive throughout, could not even tell us if the meal came with steamed/fried rice or vegetables, what kind of vegetables, etc. We asked what was vegan and her response (after going back and forth to the kitchen a number of times) was nebulous. We waited 15 minutes for spring rolls and another 30+ minutes after that for our food until we asked the owner to check on it and she came literally running out with our meals (they had obviously been ready and sitting there but not brought out to us by our server who was standing around doing nothing). They (and by they I mean not our server, who also did not check on us) brought us white rice instead of brown rice two times after that. I was hoping all of this would be alleviated by a great tasting meal, but that was far from what happened. My curried "chicken" had a disgusting taste far from that of curry, and the fake "chicken" was limp and much too soft with a nauseating texture unlike any other mock chicken I have tasted. My friend's sesame "chicken" came with five pieces of broccoli when it was supposed to have assorted vegetables with extra broccoli. Her "chicken," despite being the same as mine, was much more firm than mine was, which did not make sense since they were supposed to be the same. After I took a bite of hers and actually spit it out because it tasted and felt so strange, we seriously questioned whether or not we were eating real meat. By that point, we were both so disgusted and concerned for the legitimacy of their "vegan" options that we stopped eating with barely anything gone from our plates and a $32 dollar bill for two truly disgusting meals. If you are a vegetarian or vegan I would strongly recommend that you do NOT go to Chia Shang as there are much better restaurants around Ann Arbor with much better service and vegan options that will not make you question if you are actually eating meat nor leave you nauseous for hours. You're better off heading to Earthen Jar or Seva.

Cons: incompetent staff, communication issues, disgusting food

We love Chia Shang!

When our family wants a special dinner, we go to Chia Shang. They have a huge selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes ranging from General Tso's Sue Rou (soy based meat balls which are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside) to Stir Fried Potatoes and Peppers (I like to add a $1 order of fried tofu to this). Some of our other favorites are salt and pepper tofu, stir fried bok choy and sauteed tofu with orange sauce. The menu is extensive -- look beyond the pages marked "Vegetarian" to the authentic Chinese selections in the back -- everything in green is vegetarian and excellent. The specials at the restaurant are written in Chinese and it is jammed on weekends. If you ask, the server will recommend a favorite vegan dish. The staff is friendly and asks about my family when I come in alone to get take-out. We liked the previous owner and food, too, but I strongly disagree with the reviewers who say the food is not as good now. It is a different experience, but no less enjoyable -- the food is consistently great! In my travels, have never found any vegetarian Aisan food that comes close to this. It is the best!

Pros: Great food, Nice staff, Vast vegetarian selection

Cons: Slow service when very crowded, Menu could be more succinct

Good food, great variety

This was our favorite restaurant for a long time, but then the super-friendly-helpful owner sold it and now the vegetarian selections aren't as good. *Sigh* Nowadays the food is sort of hit-or-miss. Still good when we're craving Asian fare, but not the stellar place it used to be. Try the orange sue pao, or the fried soy bean skin roll. Their veggie miso used to be the best around, now it's average. Why did they have to change the recipes? I miss our old Chia Shang. On the other hand, next door is the Morgan & York gourmet food store, so good fun shopping while waiting for takeout.

Pros: Generally good food, Lots of selections, Good prices

Cons: Hit-or-miss, Not what it used to be
