wanted to love it - Edit

I was so psyched to get some good vegan Chinese food and thought this would be the place after reading the other reviews. I went to Chia Sen for lunch yesterday and was given the lunch menu for ordering. I was told that the spring roll included on the "vegetarian soy lunch menu" is made with egg and there are no substitutions. I ordered the soy chicken with broccoli which tasted like steamed textured vegetable protein with steamed broccoli. After waiting a while to ask for soy sauce, I heard someone at the front desk so I went over and asked for some. I then asked if I could see the dinner menu, and I am guessing that those items are much more tasty than the lunch I ordered. I would have definitely ordered off the dinner menu had I been aware, and I will try Chia Sen one more time and do just that. However, I also took out an order of Pad Thai for my husband, and he reported that there was not much flavor to the noodles and he was disappointed that there were no vegetables beyond the bean sprouts for topping. The food came out super quickly and I appreciated the complimentary pot of tea.

Pros: lots of vegetarian options, not too pricey, plenty of seating

Cons: lunch menu soy chicken with broccoli not tasty, egg is used in many vegetarian options

Friendly folks and good soy meat - Edit

Chia Sen is in kind of a strange location in a strip mall in South Portland. However, they have an extensive menu of vegetarian items. If you like soy meat, they offer many options that you would typically find on a Chinese menu with soy beef, pork, or chicken. The vegetarian options are clearly labeled on a separate section of the menu. I've only tried the soy beef and chicken, and I've enjoyed them both quite a lot (the 'chicken' is my personal favorite). The folks at Chia Sen are always friendly, and service is always quick. They have a full bar, and there is tons of easy parking right out front. If you are staying close to the airport in Portland, this is always a good option for dinner.

Pros: Tons of soy meat, Extensive selection of veggie options, Friendly service

No service - Edit

We were seated promptly given a menu and never got waited on. The server was talking to another table who already ordered. Then when he finished his 20 minute conversation he started cleaning another table. After 25 min with no water, tea or getting our order we left!

Pros: None, None, None

Cons: No service, No service, No service

Very realistic soy! - Edit

We were in Saco for a vacation and my family let me choose where I wanted to go for my birthday dinner and I found Chia Sen on! Yay! I have been an ovo-lacto-vegetarian for a year and a half and haven't really explored vegetarian restaurants. But Chia Sen had a whole page of vegetarian options! I was so excited! Usually it's only a paragraph (if that).

I had the Sesame Soy Chicken. I was rather nervous about eating it because it looked so much like the (once alive) chicken that my family was eating and the texture and taste was mostly like I remember chicken! It was excellent! I highly recommend this restaurant! It looked like it was closed from far away, but that is just because they closed the shades for ambiance. My carnivorous family enjoyed their meat and I enjoyed my soy so it is a great place for everyone to get some delicious Chinese food!

Pros: realistic soy meat, good rice, nice sized portions for sharing

Cons: rather pricey

This place is amazing! - Edit

Very, very good soymeat dishes. The texture is good, the flavor is amazing. Try the "Orange Chicken" or the "General Tso's". We've eaten there 3 times now and each time it has been excellent.

Pros: delicious food, friendly staff, affordable

Cons: None!
