Serves meat, vegan options available. A classic diner. Although very little is mentioned on the menu (only vegan ice cream), the diner has several vegan choices, including breakfast sausage (just ask Darrell) plus the steel cut oatmeal is made with water. Has vegan milks and per Darrell all the toast is made with an olive oil blend, rather than butter. Open Mon-Tue 7:00am-6:00pm, Thu-Sun 7:00am-6:00pm. Closed Wed.

Staying at my family’s camp in Raquette Lake, I was excited to try this diner after finding it here on happy cow. I looked at pictures online and was hyped for the 50s style diner with vegan options. When we arrived, we waited to be seated and I saw on the drink board that they offered almond milk and oatmilk for an additional $1.50. I had high hopes, but I could already tell the service was lacking. Figured they were just busy since it was Saturday afternoon the weekend after July 4th.
Read moreOnce we were seated, our drink orders were taken. I asked for oatmilk in my iced coffee and the waitress told me they didn’t have any. I asked for almond milk and she said they didn’t have any, so I took the coffee black. My partner says “strike one” as I’m thinking it. The wait was long to order and for our food, but again, it was busy. The menu listed a couple of vegetarian options, but as happy cow stated, I just needed to ask. When our waitress came back to take our food order, I asked for the vegan options. She went to speak to another waitress who gave her the options and she came back telling me they made a veggie skillet served with fries, sweet potato fries, or onion rings. I asked if the onion rings were vegan, she clearly didn’t know, so I said nevermind. My partner and I asked that the skillet didn’t have egg or cheese just to be sure and the waitress said “he has vegan cheese”. I was excited and feeling better about taking the 25 minute drive to try this place. When the food comes, the cheese looks… suspicious. It’s well-melted and browned which, after 10 years of veganism, I’ve found is rare in vegan cheese. I took a few bites, it tasted pretty good, but not like any vegan cheese I’d ever had.
Let me mention here that the sweet potato fries were from a bag as were my partner’s onion rings and the fries were underdone, soft, and greasy. His onion rings were similarly disappointing.
I had stopped eating at this point, unsure that the cheese was really vegan, so I found my waitress and asked for the brand they used. She told me she would find out.
This diner has a pretty open kitchen. I heard her ask Chef Darrell about the brand. He said he’d find it and let her know. A few minutes pass and I hear him say, “it’s Cabot dairy-free cheese. That’s all you need to know”. Again, I’ve been vegan for a long time and I’ve never heard of a vegan Cabot cheese. I looked online and it appears they make a lactose-free cheese, not vegan. Tummy ache ensued😒
Pros: 1950’s vibe is cool
Cons: Chef was yelling at waitresses loudly, No gloves on chef in open kitchen, Falsely advertising lactose-free cheese as vegan
