Local vegetarian eatery serving dishes inspired by the owners' Vietnamese roots. Prior to fall-2015 it had sold some non-veg food in a display case. Open Tue-Sun 11:30am-7:30pm. Take-out only from 7:30-8:30pm.

Absolutely amazing soup! - Edit

Went there with my mother, as we have been vegetarians for years and miss pho.

I got the temple soup, and my mom the more traditional soup. Both of ours were insanely good! The temple soup is an absolute must! The soups are served with interesting vegetables such as lotus root, daikon, tarp and cooked yams which were all great. We also ordered the crispy spring rolls and they were delicious.

You order food at the counter and then sit down. Seating is large open tables, not individual booths or tables. Parking can be difficult, since the only spots were on the streets.

In total, for two soups and two orders of spring rolls it was $35. A little pricey, but worth it.

Pros: vegan , authentic

Cons: can be very busy , a little pricey

Solid Choice - Edit

Came here as we arrived into town, a friend from Austin (where we’re from) recommended this place. It did not disappoint!

My boyfriend and I ordered the taro chips (the dip that comes with it was amazing), the midnight swim bowl and the rice fields bowl. He put a fried egg on his midnight swim bowl, I didn’t. Both were really delicious - filling, full of a bunch of different veggies, not too sweet or salty, and honestly you could split one of their main entrees between two people because they’re so big. If we came back, I’d probably do that and get some spring rolls as well to sample 😜

The restaurant is small, but it seems like everyone cycles in and out so it’s not a problem. Parking can be tricky, but we just parked in the neighborhood and walked in!

Delicious food to write home about... - Edit

This is one of my staple vegan restaurants. The food is super healthy, it's reasonably priced wiith nice large portions. I have recommended it to many friends and will continue to do so.

My favourite items on the menu are their soups - Diving for Pearls and Red Sand Dunes are fabulous broth soups - I can't get enough of them... and considering the amount of fresh Veggies in them, they are a good deal.

Having tried 2/3s of their menu, I can say that everything I've tried is really good.

Pros: Friendly staff :) Nice Decor :) Delicious cruelty-

My favourite veggie place in Vancouver - Edit

Everything on the menu is amazing. The food tastes very fresh, and the service is extremely quick. I have brought people with many different diets here and it is always a big hit. Would go every day if it wasn't so far from my house. I could not recommend this place more. Some personal favourites from the menu: strawberry lychee smoothie, coconut shake, rice fields bowl, golden temple soup, power salad, baisao chips, all the ice cream, and the tapioca. Also, the one at Granville Island is great too.

Pros: Delicious food, quick, great atmosphere

Cons: when it is busy may be noisy for some people

high quality contemporary Vietnamese food - Edit

I love this place and their menu is truly amazing, you can’t really go wrong a part from the papaya salad! God the people that ordered that always wear spandex in excess. The portions are huge and all of the ingredients are amazing! I actually used to work at the Granville island location and despite that being a bit of a short lived rocky experience I have an undying love for this place. The owner is really kind and the family really cares about the quality of their food.

Good find - Edit

I walked around the market several times before stumbling on this place.. I was told everything was vegan, but you can pay extra to add an egg if you so wish. I got the coconut beancurd noodles after much deliberation. They were delicious and I really enjoyed the bright flavors. But still I thought $11 was a little spendy for what it was.

Pros: good food

Cons: lIttle spendy

Probably my favourite place in Vancouver - Edit

I almost didn't come here. The menu online and in person isn't that interesting to look at and they have only a handful of items available. Those handful of items are all phenomenal. They seem to have perfected their offerings and it shows. Interesting flavour combinations, large portion sizes and I always leave feeling happy and excited I came in. My son fell in love with this place and made us come back the next day because he loved it so much. Go!

Pros: Beach chips!, Huge soups, Best flavour combos

Cons: Not airconditioned

great food, harried atmosphere - Edit

This place was highly recommended by omnivore friends, and it's true that the food is delicious -- everything was perfectly seasoned and tasted very fresh. The atmosphere though was very loud and crowded and rushed, not relaxing at all. I would have gladly paid more for table service. That being said, the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Pros: delicious

Cons: harried

Flavourful vietnamese style vegan food! - Edit

I came here last night for the first time with 2 of my non-vegan friends and we all absolutely enjoyed the experience. We ordered the non la rolls (yum!), taro chips (the dip was amaaazing), golden temple soup, rickety rickshaw bowl and the tropical rainstorm bowl. The golden temple soup was a hit with a rich coconut curry broth. The rickety rickshaw bowl was a little underwhelming flavour wise in comparison. You pay for your meals while ordering at the till and everything else is self serve (they bring you your meal).
I'd say the dishes are overall smaller than what I expected for the price.

I will be returning to try their pho and other soup mains.

Pros: Whole menu is vegan!, Friendly, helpful staff, Delicious food :)

Cons: Limited seating, Self serve

Best Pho in Vancouver--Vietnamese Food! - Edit

Best Pho in Vancouver--Vietnamese Food!
I did have a vegan spring roll but you will have to ask them what they can make vegan. Make sure to ask. It was very good.
The environment is unique.
It was like park on the street, stand to order, and then sit at a bug wooden communal table in a tiny place with communal (of course) bar seating as well. Everyone is just chowing down. Because it's small and the food is good, I felt rushed. This isn't a relaxing place or a sit and talk place, but if you're hungry and you want to inhale some epic broth...the PHO is EXCELLENT. Top notch Pho! Some of the best ever and I Pho often!

Pros: pho, amazing food, flavorful food with herbs

Cons: rushed, communal seating, small

Pretty tasty - Edit

I enjoyed the food I got -- a dip with taro chips and spring rolls. The former was more interesting than the latter, which were perhaps a little uninspired.

The service was reasonably efficient.

I did think it was pretty pricey for what I got, particularly given portion size (and the fact that it's a fast-food ordering model), though I admit I am not from Vancouver, which is on the expensive side, so perhaps natives would consider it normal.

Pros: Some items tasty and interesting

Cons: Expensive

Very good - Edit

Small and busy, but nicely decorated and clean place. I am gluten free, vegan and I found it easy to find yummy things to eat. The only con was that our cashier was somewhat impatient and we felt rushed ordering.

Pros: good food, pleasant atmosphere, clean

Good food and value - Edit

A friend who is both vegan and gluten-intolerant took me to this restaurant and knowing her good taste and food sensitivities, I knew the food would be tasty. It did not disappoint. The soup broth was flavourful but not over-powering and the vegetables al dente. The appetizer was that of taro chips and a spicy-tofu dressing. The atmosphere is not formal, large tables for people to share and barstools. Highly recommend this establishment for its clean and tasty food.

Pros: varied menu, tasty food, clean feeling of food

Cons: a bit pricey, loud music

One of the Best Restaurants in Vancouver BC! - Edit

I recently traveled to Vancouver, and had the pleasure of dining at this wonderful Vietnamese veg restaurant.

We ordered our food at the counter, and the food was brought to our table. Each dish was beautifully prepared, and each dish was perfectly spiced and mouth-watering delicious.

The hand-cut taro chips were quite a treat! I couldn't eat enough of these.

I then had a delicious papaya salad, followed by the Rickety Rickshaw Ride, Noodle bowl, shredded beancurd, crispy spring rolls, roasted peanuts, mung bean, shallots, pickled vegetables, greens, cucumber, herbs, lemon sauce. Perfection.

The only problem I have with this restaurant is that it is not closer to Los Angeles!

Pros: Food, Service

Consistently delicious - Edit

Having been to chau veggie several times since my last review I can honestly say that the food is consistently delicious. There is also more room to eat now that you can also eat in the cafe next door as it's owned by the same people.
The food on the menu is verified vegan except for some desserts which are vegetarian.
The flavours are authentic, the food is fresh and the prices are very reasonable, and to top it off portion pretty generous.
Everything is delicious!
We have tried almost everything on the menu and we have never been disappointed by the food.

Oh yes.... - Edit

This place is so good. I love every item on their menu, although one of their clear soup dishes is a little on the bland side but it was still tasty. I usually order the yellow curry soup (called Golden Temple) and the fried spring rolls. I also highly recommend the in-house chilli sauce (I think it is a satay sauce) - they sell it in mason jars but you can try it for free at the table with your food.
Their drinks are great too, I had an amazing one that was white (coconut based) with fresh mint.
Keep in mind that the seating area is small, might be a problem for bigger groups but definitely make an effort to try this amazing place.

Pros: Fresh and delicious, In-house spicy sauce, In-house cocktails

My broth was sweet and yummy and my husband had a spicy broth.
The portions are huge and I have a another meal , which will prob be breakfast.
The staff are friendly and knowledgeable

Best Vietnamese Veggie Restaurant - Edit

According to the server in 2013, all dishes are now fully vegan.

No where will you find more creative names for dishes: CandleLit Lantern Down the River, Family of 5 on a Scooter, Soft Tropical Rainstorm, Golden Temple Prayers, Diving for Pearls....and many more. They should have an award for the creativity and beauty of their menu!

Vietnamese veggie food (especially the soups) can occasionally veer towards the watery bland, without the traditional ingredients, but not here! The flavours do not disappoint. Family of 5 on a Scooter is a Vietnamese sandwich that is a must try on this menu. The spring rolls, the Golden Temple Prayers....there is so much on this menu that is excellent.

Unlike another reviewer, I love the communal tables. The seats are not the most comfortable, but I have had wonderful unexpected experiences chatting with other diners at the restaurant. What a great way to meet others who share your food proclivities!

It's true the location is out of the way, in many respects, but it is worth the commute. If you only have time to visit 5 veggie restaurants while visiting Vancouver, this is definitely one you must not miss.

Pros: Family of Five on a Scooter, Golden Temple Prayers, various rolls

Cons: uncomfortable seats

i heart veggie pho! - Edit

Mmm, veggie pho! The food at CHAU VeggiExpress is delicious! I just found out about this new place a few days ago; a Vietnamese friend told me about it. He knows I'm a vegan, and the woman who runs this place is a friend of his family's.

Anyway, I just found out about it four days ago, and have already eaten there three times, each time trying a different dish. I've tried all three noodle soups: the pho hanoi, pho hue, and pho nam. All were delicious. I've also sampled the com tofu (pan fried lemongrass & chili tofu with rice), and the curry chay (so creamy and yummy!). Everything is fresh, tasty, and a great value (a HUGE bowl of pho is $7.75).

The place is really small; there's a communal table and some bar seats. There's no table service; orders are taken at the counter. Everyone who works there is really friendly, and the restaurant's namesake and cook, Chau, is a really warm, friendly woman (tonight, she delivered freshly cut oranges to each group in the restaurant). Everytime I've been there, she's asked me if I like what I'm eating, and how she can improve it (I can't think of how she'd improve her food; even the presentation is food stylist-worthy). It's also fast without being fast food.

Maybe I'm biased, but Chau VeggiExpress is my favourite place in Vancouver right now; it's the food, the value, the service, the warmth...and I love being able to get vegan pho so close to home.
Updated from previous review on Thursday May 19, 2011

Oh bummer, went back last week after not going for over a year. The quality of the pho has slid...lots. Instead of noodles swimming in broth, my noodles were in a bowl-shaped clump at the bottom of the soup bowl - not fresh. The broth was super salty. I was disappointed.

My bf had the banh mi (vietnamese sub); he said it was delicious.

Pros: great value

Cons: very small

Best Asian Vegetarian in Vancouver? - Edit

Once in a while you come upon somewhere that makes you really smile. Chau is such a place - incredibly fresh food, mostly vegan, great value and different to the other places out there. This is veggie Vietnamese at its finest - take for example the stocks - one of the dishes has a lychee, mushroom and date base, another jicama & leek stock. Sick of plain tofu with little taste? - one of the dishes I sampled had lemongrass and chili soft tofu and a grated papaya salad. The decor is modern and chic. The ONLY thing counting against this restaurant is its location on South Victoria away from the "Veggie" hubs of Commercial and Main. But believe me, it is well worth the effort and the number 20 bus stops nearby.

Pros: Vegetarian, delicious , fresh

Vegan Pho - Edit

The spring rolls here are unfortunately not vegan. But the Pho is. I had the Pho Hanoi and it was good. I've never had real Pho so I don't really know, but it seemed authentic. It was served really fast and had huge portions for a good price.
