Worth a try if in north Durango

For those of us who love Thai food, the Four Corners region doesn’t have much to offer, so we’re always appreciative of a Thai place with decent vegan options here. Chang Thai sits in the middle of the pack: a step above Sizzling Siam in downtown Durango, and a step below Boon’s Family Thai in Farmington.

Chang Thai is moderately vegan-friendly, though unfortunately the new menu (as of mid-2024) no longer marks vegan options, so you’ll need to ask. The yellow curry, the fried tofu appetizer, and the standard-issue “egg rolls” are vegan options. Fortunately, other items can be prepared vegan on request.

The drunken noodles (pad khee mao) can be made vegan on request, and they’re reasonably good (though, as is common in many small-town Thai places, it isn’t made with the customary thick-and-chewy rice noodles, but it’s satisfying enough if one isn’t too fussy about authenticity or texture).

One item that *cant* be veganized here, unfortunately, is the Thai tea, which I was told is premade with condensed (cow) milk. On hot summer days like today we wish they would offer Thai iced tea with coconut milk instead, as Boon’s in Farmington does.

Fortunately brown rice is available on request, which we appreciate.

The place is reachable by trolley and there’s parking in the back.

A variety of delicious options.

The online menu lists more vegan options than the menu in the store. We asked questions and were told that most of the dishes could be made vegan, including all the noodle dishes. Everything we had was excellent. There is not much seating and I strongly recommend making a reservation if you are planning to go on a Friday or Saturday. But it seems like a very popular place for takeout by locals.
