First stop after landing in Bangkok

I have been visiting this restaurant for over 10 years and I will always find my way back there. The food no frills, tasty and authentic. When you walk in there is a window to your right, line up and buy some tickets with baht. Then grab a tray and find what you would like to eat. Not all staff speak English, the prices are displayed on the windows. When finished place your cutlery, plates, waste etc in the corresponding buckets on your way out. Any left over tickets can be kept indefinitely for future use. Great little veg supermarket on site too.

Affordable vegan

Similar to the vegetarian society in Chiangmai and several other major cities around Thailand. Basic Thai food at ultra affordable prices. Opens early and closes early, dine in (make sure you clean after yourself, this is a volunteer based operation) or take food to go. Clean, tasty, healthy and affordable. Highly recommended for a lunch break if you are visiting the weekend market.

Good experience

Recommendation about getting there: maps says the road between the Red Building Vintage and the Vegetarian Market is closed, but it actually was not! We had quite a detour through backstreets because of this, but that was unnecessary.

Not the best food I ate but we also didn’t have a clue what we were ordering. It was also around 13.00 oclock which means some places are starting to close up soon (oh and we were hungry haha). We ended up ordering at the stand with a lot of vegetable based dishes, but a lot of the ones I chose were VERY spicy. Make sure to ask (yes with a translation app, they don’t speak much English).
We also ordered a plate of fried mushrooms (I think Lions Mane / Monkey Head), very yummy.

If I’m in the area I’d definitely like to try again, but with more time to figure out what is what.

Overall lovely to be in the environment and try something random haha.

The shop as part of it was also great and we bought some sweet baked things there which are hard to find somewhere else!

Hidden gem

This place is well hidden at the back of a shopping mall. Cross the road from the Chatuchak market, then follow a small path, you will arrive. There are different stalls with various food choices. Relatively cheap. I got noodles and mushroom salad for 55 baht.

Cantine

So delicious!

Upon arrival you change some Baht for coupons. Quite a nice system as you get your coupons back in Baht whatever you don't spend. There are quite a lot of food stalls which all looked vegan as far as I could see. The food was so good and really cheap, so we came back the day after. Some dishes: pad thai, khao soi, spicy tofu salad, grilled sticky rice with banana, fried dough with teriyaki filling and we basically only scratched the surface. For 150 baht you can get a lot of food here! Highly recommended, all friendly people as well.

FUN!

What a fun experience! Buy your coupons when you walk in to the right, and then enter the food court to the right and use your tokens to get food! I spent 95 baht in total, and was FULL! Absolute bang for your buck. I got some yellow rice, tofu katsu, clear soup, mushroom “sausage”, a fun drink, and a sago dessert. Try the sago in coconut milk!!

Food stalls and vegan supermarket

What's not to love? Vegan food for days and a vast majority of local people. The supermarket has interesting finds, e.g. vegan moon cakes.

Authentic Thai near Chatuchak Weekend Market

This spot offers authentic Thai food at very affordable prices, with many dishes under 40 baht. I had the noodles, which were good, and my husband enjoyed a fresh pizza and Longan juice, both of which were also good. You purchase food tickets at the entrance and get a refund for any unused tickets.

We used Google Maps to find the place, and it was accurate, located about five minutes from Chatuchak Weekend Market. Avoid trying to take a short cut through the mall as there is no exit to the street.
If you’re in the market and hungry it’s worth a visit but I wouldn’t go out of my way to return.

Pros: Affordable

Vegan buffet and wholefood shop!

Wow. Hidden away near the Chatachuk weekend market is a lil’ vegan paradise. ‘Street food’ for vegans! You purchase tokens at the counter and then use them to pay for the buffet food and you can also use them inside the shop.

As far as I could tell, what I chose was vegan. I’m never 100% sure in Thailand as to whether people always understand the veggie/vegan difference, but I was told it was all vegan so I accepted that. It was really tasty and I’m so glad it exists! There were lots of people there which was great to see.

Tasty real Thai food court

Buy your tokens from a counter when you arrive (the vendors only take vouchers, and any vouchers left over, you can change back into Baht at the end). Most vendors offer small (ISH) dishes, which is great for sharing and trying a few. Price was very cheap. Food was very tasty. Possibly the spiciest Khao soi I've ever had haha, but was tasty.

Local vegan food

We would never have found this place without HappyCow, but we were so happy that we did!

This is a big local restaurant with many vegan food stalls, almost all of it is vegan. The staff have little English, so you just point at what you want. Some of the stalls have English signs.

When you enter, you have to buy vouchers that you exchange for your food. You can return any vouchers you did not spend and get your money back. The food is so cheap - we spent only 75 baht for two plates and we were full afterwards. We had mock chicken, gimmari and yellow rice and everything was very good.

The seating area was clean and the place seems to be very popular with the locals! It is a bit hot, though. The place is on google maps, which makes it easier to find it, but you have to walk through an opening in a fence - do not be discouraged by this. There is a picture attached to the review of HappyCow member Hopeless that shows the fence.

It was perfect to visit this place after a stroll around Chatuchak Market.

One of the best places in Bangkok

Excellent authentic Thai food. If you haven't eaten there, you haven't been to Bangkok.

Note: I advise against visiting Chatuchak Market deeper. Trade in wild and domestic animals that are kept in terrible conditions. But rest assured, you can eat at The Vegetarian Society and avoid this very sad sight.

Eating like a local - recommended experience when visiting Chatuchak market

PLEASE NOTE: Come early! We arrived by 12.30, and quite many stalls had already sold out.

We came here from the market and were not sure we are on the right track at first - as one needs to step through a hole in a fence and walk over a parking lot first (I uploaded a pic for reference).

Right at the entrance, one needs to swap money for vouchers. You can swap 50 or 100 Baht, but don't worry, if you don't use it up, you can swap the remainder back at the end. We spent 150 Baht for us two, and were pretty full afterwards.

We got some fried noodles, glass noodles, mock meats, tofu skin and turnip cakes - all of which were cheap and tasty (wouldn't say the best food I ever had, but considering how cheap they wear, definitely five stars).

There is also one stall that sells vegan pizza (which is not as cheap as the other stuff) in case somebody yearns for Western food.

Pros: Large choice, cheap, nice experience / very "local"

Cons: (bathroom) hygiene improvable

variety and value

Surely this place can't be beaten on price when it comes to vegan food in Bangkok. I changed 100 THB (less than 5 AUD) to coupons and found it difficult to spend it all!

I tried the khao soi, fried chicken, a mushroom curry puff, and took some crispy soy meat snacks home for later. The khao soi was less creamy but more aromatic than the ones I had tried in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The fried chicken tasted like it might have been made from frozen tofu, with exceptional texture and flavour. It came with a zesty, citrus and herb dipping sauce and the customary clear refreshing soup. The snacks were super tasty too.

The atmosphere reminded me of Blue Boy in KL or hawker food centres in Singapore. Definitely recommend visiting, especially if you're shopping at Chatachuk or Bang Sue Junction. Get there early if you go on market days though. We arrived around midday on a Saturday and lots of dishes were selling out.

Awesome local vegan spot with plenty of options

We came to the market before heading to channel 7 for the Muay Thai events held Sunday afternoons. This place was a lucky find that made our day. There's even a pizza oven with vegan pizza on offer!
Admittedly, we went for local dishes and ate way too much because it was so cheap and tasty.
Little English is spoken, but it was not too difficult to get what we wanted, and friendly locals are always happy to assist if needs be.
We will come back for sure and we cannot recommend this place enough.
Can't wait to get more fried "chicken". (We came back, and it was awesome!)
A local authentic and delicious spot!

Pros: Local food and local feel , So many vegan things to try, The fried "chicken"

Cons: A bit hard to find, Little English spoken (not a big deal), Must get coupons to pay for food

Such a great find

What a hidden gem. I can’t believe I haven’t been here before!

It’s basically all vegan apart from the pizza stand it seems.

The locals told me it’s all run by volunteers to try and get people to eat vegetarian/vegan.

I spent less than £3 on 5 courses and fruit. Lots of choice, healthy and some fried foods.

If I’m ever back in Bangkok this is the first place I’m going!

You just have to exchange cash at the counter for vouchers, any unspent vouchers you can return for cash. Very simple and easy.

Pros: Lots of variety , Very cheap

My favourite place in Bangkok

So much choice! I was told that everything is vegan. Very tasty food, at great prices. If you don't want spicy food, it can be tricky to get that message across to some vendors. I like that there are no non-vegan vendors anywhere nearby, so no nasty smells or sights.

Pros: Food!, Price!

‘Pit noi’ means little spicy btw ☺️

07 Mar 2024

After googling it, I'm not sure that "pit noi" means little spicy. "Nit noi" means a little but "ped" means spicy. I've been told to say "mai ped" if you don't want spicy food.

Great food

We came on market day (Saturday) an hour before it closed. Really wish we'd come earlier so there was more options. What we had was lovely though and was all vegetarian when we asked. The veggie health food shop was really good as well. Absolute bargain as well, would go back if we were here longer.

Pros: Taste of food, Cost

Affordable and good

Near the big weekend market. You have to pay at the counter to get coupons. The food was good and I‘d like to come back and try other stuff since it‘s so affordable. A bit hard to know what‘s inside some dishes.
