Very ethical and great selection on the menu. Staff very friendly. we had coconut curry and peanut sauce chicken noodle, all vegan and so tasty. For a fair price. Refill on water is 10bhat for jug. So take your bottles. Also no straws! Love

Best place in Koh Phayam - Edit
After trying a few other places I ended up back here every day. Massive vegan selection and a good ethical place. No straws and water refills available. Great curries and wraps, good vegan chicken and delicious brownies. If it went 100% vegan it would be perfect.

The menu at the Cha Chai Restaurant is really great! Almost impossible to NOT find something to your taste :) I tried the Penang Curry with mock chicken and a Coconut Matcha Latte. 5* for both!!

An everyday spot! - Edit
This place is great for vegans! Just ask the owners and they will guide you through the menu. We went here almost everyday for a week, i Highly recomend the breakfast, suck as the iced chai teas, chai latte, shakes, toast with banana jam, vegan sausage, tomato jam and coconut soup! i would give five but i can't. they do have some shrimp paste in their curry but are working an making their own next season.

We are fans - Edit
This place is a warm hearted place where you wanna come back again and again. The menu is HUGE so you wanna come back just to try it out again. It was 99% vegetarian while we was there. No meat options on the menu. And they use mushromm sauce instead of fish sauce. (Ask to be 100% sure)
Read moreWe stayed on the island for about two weeks and we was there almost every day for food or just a cool-down shake.
It was easily for me as a vegan to choose. And you can easily ask for non-sugar options as well.
Delish breakfast options. And while you are waiting for your treats you can pick up a book from their tiny little bibliothéque
All GMO free and filled with love!!

A friendly, almost-vegetarian restaurant - Edit
On the northern road heading west from Ao Yai (the long beach) to the school in the middle of the island, there are a number of restaurants with signs saying "vegetarian," but most of them serve lots of meat (the signs are simply advertising that they *also* serve veg options). There are two exceptions: Cha Chai Home and Baan Namchaa (reviewed separately), both of which (as of Jan 2013) are almost entirely ovo-lacto-veg except for one animal item. In the case of Cha Chai Home, that item is oyster sauce, which is included in some of the dishes but can be left out or substituted for soya sauce on request.
Read moreCha Chai Home is the child of a very friendly Euro-Asian couple, and their extensive menu showcases this international flavor with Thai and Western dishes, including a number of faux "meat" items (we had the ginger "fish," which was particularly good). The menu does not explicitly indicate which items are vegan, but let the helpful owners know if you're vegan and they'll take care of you. Not all of their dishes can be veganized, but a good many can.
All food is made fresh to order, which can take some time when there are many patrons, so it's advisable to come a little early if you can.
Cha Chai Home is located on the northern road to Ao Yai, roughly in the middle of Koh Phayam, west of the school and east of the "Middle Village."
They close at 7pm, but if you're an early bird there are good dinner options on offer.
Enjoy!
Pros: Very friendly, Huge menu, Quite a few vegan options
Cons: Not completely veg (but almost)
