Familiar for daily meals - Edit
With a dozen tables, this familiar restaurant has a home-made menu. The daily menu has very good price, 9.5 euros with 3 starters, 3 main courses, various desserts and tea. Some of them can be vegan. It is expensive to eat "a la carta": 10 -14 euros each dish.

Read moreDel menú diario, todos los primeros eran veganos y de los segundos , la gran mayoría lo eran. De primero comimos lentejas y gazpacho, y de segundo unas hamburguesas vegetales(De seitán y verduras) que venían acompañadas de arroz.
De postre elegimos fruta.
Salimos llenos y pagamos 10,50 euros por el menú. El local se llenó(Fuimos un martes a comer).

I've been having lunch here once a week for years, since it's the only vegetarian restaurant close to my office. They have a daily menu with a choice of 4 different starters (mostly vegan) and 3 different main courses (mostly vegetarian), so don't forget to ask the nice waitress. One of the main dishes is always a combination plate of rice, legumes, fresh and cooked vegetables plus some stuff most likely using eggs or dairy (like croquettes, tofu meatballs, etc.). This is always a good choice for vegans taking away the vegetarian stuff if the other two main courses are vegetarian. Cooking is spanish/mediterranean, unsophisticated and delicious. If my mum had been vegetarian, she would've prepare dishes like the ones you can have here.

The last restaurant I tried when I was in Madrid it was the best one! the normal price for the menu at lunch is 9.50€, but I paid 8€ because of a vegetarian day, what a luck! :) you can choose one between two first plates, a second between four (if I remember correctly) and a dessert, even if when I went there was not a "real" vegan dessert (apple compote)...

finally, I recommend it as the first place to eat visiting in this city: it is not located in the commercial area, but with the subway you'll have no problems to reach it!

A cozy, relaxing small restaurant with friendly staff. A lunch menu del dia was 12 euro in Nov 2009 (including appetizer, main, dessert & herbal tea). The food was very mild and simple, but freshly prepared. Food could have used more flavor/imagination, but still was a nice lunch & quite enjoyable.

Tasty, cheap, great atmosphere - Edit
Tucked away down a side street in Northern Madrid (nearest Metro: Alvarado) is Restaurante Vegetariano Ceres. It may look a little tatty from the outside, but I can recommend it. I was met by the smiling owner and waitress who immediately brought a jug of tap water, a seeded brown bread roll and olive oil for dipping. I chose the amazing value Menu del Dia (menu of the day) for 9.50 Euros. There were 4 choices of starter and main course, and I think 3 desserts.
Read moreFor my starter I had cauliflower in garlic - interesting but very tasty. The cauliflower was cooked almost to a mush but mixed with roasted garlic, olive oil and seaweed. Really good. Then I had croquettas of carrot and leek, with a side salad of lettuce, carrot, cucumber and red cabbage. For dessert I chose the batida de fresa - basically a strawberry smoothie. My only complaint was that it was a little too sweet - I think they may have added sugar. Then a cup of camomile tea.
For 9.50 Euros, it was great value. It's got a good atmosphere too - nice tinkly music in the background, little bits of veg art on the walls. I got there when it opened at 1.30 and by 2.30 it was almost full. It has about 10 tables, variously set for 1, 2 or 4 people. It had a good mix of clientele. I was there alone, as was an older man. A young couple at another table, then 2 local workmen, then a group of 6 young men and as I left, a group of 4 elderly ladies arrived.
One word of warning - the menu is all in Spanish and I didn't get the impression that the staff speak English. It's not exactly in a touristy area so this is hardly surprising. Good chance to practice your Spanish, and if you don't konw what anything on the menu is, take a chance and just order anything!!!
One note - as far as I can tell, it now only opens from 1.30 to 4pm Monday to Saturday. I don't think it's open on Fri or Sat evenings now. I lived right by it for a month and I certainly didn't see the shutters open on any evening.
For the money, this place is well worth seeking out.
