Not for Vegans

No vegan options were labelled on the menu. When we asked the owner about vegan options, he didn't seem to know what "vegan" meant (though his English was excellent and I had clearly defined the word for him repeatedly), and suggested various non-vegan foods (stating the animal elements they contained) and then questioned why I was a vegan. When I began to talk about the dairy industry he implied I was a liar. It was very awkward and all conversation with him made me so uncomfortable.

I eventually paid £15 for a dish that only consisted of pieces of vegetables on a skewer, accompanied by chips and a side salad. My boyfriend received a far more substantial non-vegan meal. The food itself was very high-quality-- delicious and clearly healthy-- but with next to no protein can hardly be described as a meal. When it came to desserts the owner told us he had vegan feta cheese. After previous remarks, I did not believe him and didn't order any. The drinks (homemade cherry juice) were delicious but pricey (£5 a pop), just like everything else.

The restaurant was empty and it was clear the place was struggling due to completely unfair discrimination due to associations of being pro- Russia's war. The owners are not pro-Russian government and the restaurant decorated in Ukrainian flags. The man serving us wore several Ukrainian t-shirts during service. Perhaps he had a strong sense of hygiene, but it gave one a very strange feeling, to see the same person in different clothes every time he served you. He also made some strange remarks about us being lucky the place was so quiet, then later changed tack and admitted they hardly get any customers.

I remember eating here years ago before I went vegan and the food and atmosphere were excellent. Since then, the place has not kept up with the world and sadly due to no fault of its own suffered a steep decline in popularity. Having said that though, this place is in no way vegan-friendly and the culpability for that lies entirely with the restaurant. Also if you're the only ones in a place, it isn't really helpful for the server to make up for the lack of ambient noise by telling stories about his own life at length-- it was way too much, plus we hardly got a word in edgeways.

I really don't understand why this restaurant is on HappyCow.
