Closed down, and assets auctioned June 2023 - Edit
A very sad sight, the cafe and gift shop are just empty shells, the assts were auctioned off earlier this month so I can't see this well loved location re-opening anytime soon. The artisan workshops are still opening, the mill stream is almost empty after some problem. I can't find any statements from the Trust and hope that things improve
The artisan makers are still open and waiting on your visits to them. Love these kinds of places where they’re utilised for the arts and crafts.
The cafe is closed but not the other businesses so please carry on visiting them.
We have been a regular of this cafe for years. Ever since it changed hands it’s been getting worse. I used to love their home-made bean or mushroom pates, salads and other unusual dishes. Now it’s a very limited menu of soup, homily pie, things on toast or quiche (yawn). Today when we went in at lunchtime (which would normally be a very busy time) it was practically empty. And no, it’s not the recession, it’s the fact that the menu is boring, unimaginative, and other places, still very busy, that are doing veggie/vegan food far better. If they don’t change, I give them a year at most. Very sad to see what was once one of my favourite places, being run by people who have absolutely no idea.
What’s happened to one of our favourite cafes? PKML is spot on. No homity pie , no menu, just a specials board! A very poor salad compared to previous ones. Very sad. If people can’t make a vegetarian/vegan cafe work in these days with the massive interest in all things plant based it really is a shame. The atmosphere changed when it changed its name to Hlaf and got rid of the wonderful quirky seating.
So pleased that this cafe is now veggie (although obviously wish it was vegan) Popped in today and had a garlic mushroom toastie with salad and my partner had the curried chickpea soup. Both were delicious. The beetroot latte was good. Wish there were more vegan options though on the menu, only a soup, a sandwich and one cake. Forgot to take a photo so need to go again! Would have given an extra star if there had been more choice.
Pre covid I would have given Cauldwell Mill Cafe a 5 star rating but the place is unrecognisable now. Let’s start with the previously glorious slice of the best homity pie ever which is now a sad shallow pastry case with an average garlic/cheesy stuff. The still advertised ‘famous salad’ is nothing to shout about. Where are the super healthy mix of fruits, salads and various extras that were appreciated by all?
And the original chocolate cake is no more. Criminal.
To summarise, going to Cauldwell Mill used to be a treat we looked forward to. Today it’s just another business that’s cut too many corners and just doesn’t care.
Absolutely spot on ! Called in today and although last time it wasn’t good, it’s slipped further. No homity pie and just a few ‘specials’ . Salads are very disappointing.
We stopped for lunch after a walk. As others have said you would hope a veggie cafe would cater for vegans a bit better. Only soup or toastie with mushroom pate and hummus for vegans. My husband had homity as he is a veggie and I opted for a toastie which was nice enough and helped by the lovely salad. Would have loved to have had cake but no vegan option other than flapjack, which is not very exciting. I understand there are lots of vegetarians but with the growing plant based movement it but it does seem odd that a vegetarian cafe does not do more vegan options.
Overall the mill is excellent... perfect when out walking in the Bakewell area. The staff are friendly and helpful and it's great for vegetarians. But let's face it... most people are looking for vegan food nowadays.
There was one vegan cake - a carrot cake - but we counted 14 that weren't vegan. And there was soup and a vegan toastie.
If they had more vegan options then I'd be keen to recommend it - it's fine if you're one of those old fashioned vegetarian types though!
I’ve eaten here loads of times over the years and I have never been disappointed.
It’s a lovely, warm and friendly little cafe set in beautiful surrounding.
For a vegetarian place you’d expect at least half the menu to be vegan, there was one toastie and two soups and that’s it. The toastie was made with pate from a tube. (I only know this because they sell the tubes in the shop next door!)
Miserable woman who served us could not care less. Didn’t seem to know what vegan was, after we asked several times, she brought over a cheese toastie that we’d ordered (thinking she’d told us it was vegan) and it was dripping with dairy. We said is this vegan cheese she said no it’s “normal cheese”.
I don’t need to tell the people on here how dairy is anything BUT normal. What clinched this was on the way back to the car we saw baby calves penned in their tiny cages away from their mothers and it broke our hearts.
Abysmal service, awful vegan menu. You might like it if you’re vegetarian, the salads and pies looked better than what we had.
We visited here last weekend and had a wonderful time! I rang ahead and checked if there was disabled access for my mum, which there was, and we pre-booked a table. There were five of us for lunch, a couple of us had the special of 'no chick'n pie', which came with a lush salad, a couple had flatbread and hummus with salad and another had mint and pea soup. The order arrived swiftly and was hot and delicious. The whole menu was vegan with the exception of the cakes, but there was flapjack, parkin, and fruit cake which were vegan. We had flapjack and parkin for dessert and the cost of the meal was around £70.
So shocked after reading the reviews. So we were left ten mins queuing at the door- due to their Covid friendly process which was fine the fact they walked past us 6 times and did not even acknowledge us in anyway was a sign of things to come.
They had minimise the tables so we were nicely spread out. Once seated our order was taken really quickly - I had soup £5.95 and my husband had a a filled roll and salad £7.95. This took just under 45 minutes to make it to our table after ordering. In the mean time the room was very cold only one person the room braved taking their coat off.
Very disappointed about the choice of food for a veggie establishment it was as dull as dish water. Mainly filled roll, jacket potato and a pasta dish.
When the food arrived- soup had little flavour, the roll was hard, my husband had the same issue with his roll but the salad that came with his was decent, lots of little tasters of different veggie salads. It was for the mixed salad accompaniment that I actually awarded the two stars.
This place has massive potential but one the day we went it was just not evident
An unexpected find on the way to Chatsworth. Delicious vegetarian and vegan food. Good value for money. Friendly and welcoming staff. A really delightful home-made feel to the whole experience. Highly recommended!
We've been here a handful of times; it's definitely on our repeat visit list. It's a friendly, pleasant and reasonably priced vegetarian cafe where you can get a nice cup of tea and cake or a filling veggie meal.
The mains are mostly along the lines of a veggie flan or pie with salad or jacket potato; there are lots of jacket potato options and the cakes are superb, with several gluten free and vegan options.
If you are appreciate old machinery the working old water wheel powered flour mill is definitely worth a visit.
Eaten here a couple of times when on holiday. Location to die for. But only a couple of vegan options, and a lot of the menu is simply a roll with salad. All very nice and reasonable choice. Very good chocolate and carrot cake.
I love coming to this place as the cafe is really cute with a lovely view of the mill race, old church pew seats, gorgeous tasty salads and mmmm seriously amazing hummus and soda bread (thinking back, I hope the soda bread is vegan because I forgot to ask). My mum and I like to come here after a walk in the hills and the food has always hit the spot very nicely. Definitely a destination in the area. (The shop at the mill is well worth checking out as well - they have lots of nice kitchen and garden stuff and just loads of random nice things, many vegan & eco friendly)
Visited here with my mum and was pleasantly surprised. There isn't a huge vegan choice but the menu is completely vegetarian otherwise. My mum is neither and enjoyed her Homity Pie and salad, all of which was fresh and far from boring. I had the only vegan main option which was the Black Bean Rissoles which weren't very flavoursome and were very dry. However the rest of the meal was enjoyable. We were too full to eat after the main so took away some cake. A few of the cakes are vegan, I opted for the Date and Walnut, which my dog decided to pinch from my handbag when I got home so I've no idea what it tasted like but it looked delicious!
The cafe is in a beautiful location and there are plenty of local walks in the area. Dogs are also allowed in the cafe. The gift shops/craft shops sell unusual and interesting items. You can also buy flour, oats etc from the mill at what I thought were reasonable prices. My mum thoroughly enjoyed her afternoon there and has been planning her next visit already!

Fairly good food in a lovely location. You wouldn't expect to find a vegetarian cafe here, so in that respect it was a nice surprise. I do find all the veg cafes in the Peaks do the same food ie Homity Pie and basic salad. The soup was very average. With more effort, it could be really great. Also, how much would it take to bring cutlery to the table? It's called service!!
COULD BE FABULOUS - QUALITY VARIES & TIMES ODD! - Edit
We first visited Caudwells a few years ago, and had one of our best restaurant vegetarian meals for years. Sadly, on two further occasions were disappointed to varying degrees. On our second visit, it appeared the (owner?) wasn't cooking, and the "fresh" flan and salad served were obviously neither fresh, nor nicely presented. Gave it one more chance a few months ago, and although the presentation of food was back to standard, a lot of the food (including the glorious looking cakes) seemed almost tasteless. This place could truly be fabulous, it's location is stunning overlooking a mill-race, just down the road from Chatsworth. In a mill complex where you can buy stoneground flour etc. The other thing that is extremely odd, and madly annoying is it's restricted food service times. On our last visit, we arrived just before midday and were turned away because lunch service was only between (say) 12.30 - 2pm. Can't quite remember. What this meant was that when we did return, the place was overflowing with coach party customers, nibbling on scones and tea, and we struggled to queue, order our food, and find a seat in the allotted window of opportunity. A real shame, and I genuinely hope the owner reads this, and takes our comments in the spirit intended, because we would like to become regular customers!
*PS, just read previous review, and have to say, toilets are 30 seconds walk, adjacent to Art Gallery!! Cheers!
Very busy in the daytime but the staff keep their patience well. The cafe is in a beauty spot overlooking a river (the Wye or the Derwent? I can never remember)which seems to be for ever on the point of overflowing.
Usually two good soup options. Cakes are a speciality but don't ask for a scone because they fall to bits when you try to cut them in half.
