casphalt - Edit

i went there with a friend on 27 may 2017 to attend a handpan performance. before our arrival, i had communicated with casphalt's staff via facebook to ensure that there were vegan and 5-pungent-free options.

"then i think you and your friends must be able to order something to eat. we have vegan brownie, two savoury dishes (no garlic and onion), some dairy cakes."

"Sorry, three savoury dishes, one vegan, two with egg or milk"

turned out there had been miscommunication between me and the facebook correspondent, and the only vegan option on that day was the brownie. through my interaction with staff on site, it didn't leave me with the impression that they were vegan-friendly. my friend and i separately had brownies and fried wanton, which were average and unimpressive.

ambience within the cafe was wonderful. one hour with the handpan/shakuhachi duo lifted me out of hk and i'll definitely try to make it if there's another such performance.

things were different elsewhere in the compound though (which are out of casphalt's ambit). on that scorching day, nearer the abandoned(???) old folks' home or temple(???), a cat was captive in a wire-mesh cage, its food and water overturned; tortoises were left to dehydrate in the rectangular pond, until my friend turned on the water hose for them whereupon they eagerly waddled towards the water source. i later emailed spca about this, with no reply, and if you chance upon them when you're there please could you do the same.

4 stars within casphalt's cafe. 2.5 stars within its compound.

Pros: great for community performances/exhibitions

Cons: doesn't seem to be vegan-friendly, mainly chinese menu
