Loved, loved, loved this place! - Edit
I absolutely loved this place. We ate here twice, and I wouldn't have minded eating here even more than that.
The location is cute with an attached bookstore, gift store, and children's reading area. The dining room is in a courtyard type area. On our first night, they didn't have the chile relleno or the dessert we wanted, but they gave us other options. We tried the ceviche (small portion but tasty) and the veggie burger. I thought the burger was really unique and enjoyed the flavor. They gave us a slice of a vegan pie that still remains a slight mystery - it was delicious, but I have no clue what was in it except perhaps cocoa and plantains.
For our next visit, we were able to try the chiles rellenos. They came unfried, which was a totally different, healthier take than I've seen in the U.S. They were very tasty, and so was the plantain pie that followed. (It was a different pie than the previous visit, but even tastier!)
They also have a little food shop where you can buy granola, cookies, nuts, seeds, chocolate, and other small items.
Pros: Great food, Healthy options, Nice ambience
Cons: Didn't have everything on the menu, Limited options

NOT Vegetarian - Edit
They advertise this place online as being vegetarian but is very far from it: they offer all kind of dead animal including a daily paleo menu. Knowing this the food is very good and there are several vegetarian and vegan options. They have a daily vegetarian menu which apparently in some days can be made vegan.
Pros: Nice patio restaurant
Cons: NOT VEG*N

My favourite vegan food in Oaxaca - Edit
This was the best vegan food I had in Oaxaca. The restaurant has a very nice setting and atmosphere, and is right next to a lovely bookshop. The day we visited they had a vegan set menu for MX$90 which included soup, main dish (taquitos), dessert (a very small fruit dish) and tea (well supposedly...this never came but I didn't mention it because I didn't particularly want it after all that food). The soup and taquitos were really good, although the dessert was a bit underwhelming. My boyfriend had a veggie burger which was very nice. The menu has clearly marked vegan options, including one vegan dessert. They also seemed to have a large selection of beers.
Pros: Nice atmosphere, Clear vegan options
Cons: None

Quite good food but not amazing - Edit
The food here is good. Ingredients are fresh and there is a lot of variety and different kinds of dishes on the menu. But there's a lot of white bread, white pasta etc. It would be nice to have healthier wholegrain options and for there to be brown rice. The food is nice nonetheless and the menu is good for both vegetarians and vegans.
Pros: Veg and vegan options
Cons: No wholegrains, all white flour

Excellent Food and Vegan Friendly - Edit
I was visiting Oaxaca with my boyfriend and am a long-term vegan. I really enjoyed this restaurant for the vegan menu that they offer. The hamburguesa de avena, chile relleno de picadillo de seitan and the humus dish were excellent. I am so happy that this restaurant in Oaxaca has a menu vegano and offers very tasty food. We wished that we could have stayed in Oaxaca longer to return to this great restaurant.
Pros: Nice location, Great vegan dishes
Cons: Serves fish, which is not vegetarian, Fish is devastating to the seas, Few vegan options

Delicious vegan lunch - Edit
I loved both meals I had at Calabacitas Tiernas. Both times I got the vegan ,end of the day, which includes salad, soup, entree, and a drink. Sometimes the menu of the day is vegetarian, not vegan, but they keep their Facebook up to date so you can check before you go. Even if th special isn't vegan, there are three other vegan options on the menu.
Pros: Excellent food, Charming courtyard

Great Spot - Edit
Visited twice for lunch and each time was very happy with the food and service. They have vegan days where the whole menu is vegsn but it fell on vegetarian days for me. Although they modified the menu to accomodate me. Soups are very tasty, salads and seasoning too. I loved the hot mint tea the day I happened to have a cold.
Pros: Tasty, Vegan friendly, Varied
Cons: The wind inside the restaurant

Wonderful - Edit
The cook at Calabacitas is wonderful. The food is always fresh and clean. Each day her menu varies and she is very creative in her menu preparation. For 90 pesos ($7USD) you get juice, homemade bread with salsa, soup, salad, your entree, dessert and tea. Always delicious. 2 days a week she offers a vegan menu. If you are vegan, you can ask her to accommodate you on other days and she usually can.
Her door is a bit hard to find.. She hangs a green chalkboard on the door with the days menu. It is right next to a coffee shop.
Go. You will enjoy it. Vegetarian, vegan or not. Everyone enjoys her food even serious meat eaters. Try it. Only open M-F 1:30-3:30ish
Pros: Clean food, Healthy food, All homemade
Cons: Only open for lunch, Easy to walk past

Amazing Vegan & Vegetarian Oasis - Edit
I stumbled upon Calabacitas Tiernas as it doesn't even have a sign on the restaurant but does have a chalkboard they hang on the door daily with specials. This lunch only place offers a fixed price, five course vegan or vegetarian special lunch daily which includes bread, soup, salad, main course and desert, tea and includes a different juice drink daily. The food is amazing. Beautifully prepared, hygienic, delicious and creative. The stunningly beautiful owner is also the server and speaks perfect English and is friendly and helpful. The crowd is a mix of younger, hip, urban professionals and foreign tourists who have found their way to this vegetarian oasis. Highly recommended.
Pros: Delicious Food, Friendly Staff, Great Value
Cons: Needs a Better Sign
