Promising cafe near the museum, but mostly sold out

We went to the museum on a rainy day in may, so it wasn't as crowded for us. It was actually quite empty this time.

The menu however, was mostly sold out (vege options). That was a bit disappointing, because it looked promising. The bean paste was very nice, and the tea was okay.

The additional cookie was a bit bland, but very filling, which was nice after a long train ride and museum visit.

I hope the next person gets to enjoy more of the menu, and I'd say you should give it a visit if you can to try it yourself.

Nice to have vegan options, but be careful when ordering

My husband and I were surprised to see that there were vegan options on the menu at Cafe Rimse located just outside the ticket gates of Upopoy Ainu Museum. When we first got there, it was still about 10 so we went into the museum first and then came back to the cafe at 12 only to find that it was very crowded. People were lined up out the door. We were able to get an outdoor table, which I secured while my husband went in to order for us. It took a long time to order and also for our food to come after ordering. I definitely recommend eating here EARLY, like around 11, to avoid the crowds.

Unfortunately, the staff made a mistake when they were entering our order into the register, and when my lunch came, it was NOT the vege option that we had ordered. One of the lunches was ok, but the other one had fish in it. We told the staff about the mistake and first they told us that they couldn't fix the mistake because they were all sold out. I was very disappointed but we just ate the vegetables and left the rest. After another 15 minutes or so, they suddenly brought us another vegetable soup and apologized for the mistake. We were surprised and confused because they had already told us that they wouldn't be able to fix our order.

The soup was OK but nothing exciting. We didn't get a chance to try any of the side dishes that come with the set due to their mistake of giving us the non-vegan set.

We also got an Ainu dessert that was kind of like a soft cookie made from potatoes. It was alright, but not my favorite.

Next to this cafe, there is another cafe called Nanakamado, and they had another kind of Ainu dessert that was sort of similar, but it was made with pumpkin, rice flour, beans, and walnuts. That one was more tasty in my opinion.

There is also a vegetarian cafe that has vegan options in Shiraoi City called Yui, where we had dinner that night. The food there is better in my opinion. But if you find yourself hungry while you are at the museum, eating at Cafe Rimse is an option. Just be extra careful when you are ordering to confirm that you want the VEGE option.

Pros: vegan-friendly lunch, snacks are available, you can experience Ainu food

Cons: they mistook our order and gave us fish, it was VERY crowded at 12pm
