Hidden gem in the mountains, one of my favorites in Kyoto

Cafe Millet is this hidden jewel in the mountains you can keep as your little secret and I really love that. It is obviously out of the way, but trust me it is so worth the visit because the surroundings of the cafe are gorgeous and the food is out of this world. The owner uses vegetables and fruits from her farm outside the cafe and you can immediately taste how fresh the ingredients are the minute you pop them into your mouth. You have to make a lunch reservation ahead of time (one day in advance I think) but the owner was kind enough to prepare an impromptu meal for me when I called on the same day I was visiting. She also hosts weddings and workshops in the cafe which is the perfect setting for it. I would highly recommend this place as a lovely getaway from the hustle of the city. There is a bus that takes you there but it only comes once in an hour, so definitely plan ahead and you won't be disappointed.

Pros: Amazing and freshly prepared food, Cozy and gorgeously decorated interior, Beautiful and peaceful surroundings

Cons: Far from the city centre, Only mode of public transport there is by bus

Delicious vegan organic, renovated farmhouse

An easy bus ride from Kyoto, Cafe Millet serves a lunch set in their sunny dining room overlooking the family farm fields. Our meal included squash potage , tofu, grilled and pickled veg, vegan pizza, rice with aduki beans, edamame , vegan quiche , green salad, apple tart, herb tea/coffee. Home baked bread was served with (optional) honey harvested from their hives. The ambiance is tranquil, the staff is friendly & the owner speaks English. She kindly offered to drive us to a nearby village , Ohara, to visit temples & gardens. Portions are moderate , Japanese -style (2500 yen). The beauty of the setting and the quality/presentation of the food makes it worth the price. The cafe sponsors art, music, craft events . Reservations required: tel 075-741-3303; e -mail to:millet@cafemillet.jp

Transport: take Kyoto bus 34 from Demachiyanagi station. Use exit 7 (escalator ) from the Keihan line; bus stop E is right outside, in front of the station. Take bus to terminus Shiroyama. Walk 3 mins straight ahead to farmhouse on left side of main road, down small incline (old road). There is a sign outside the house "Millet."We reserved our meal by email since we don't have a phone.
