Such a pleasant experience

I took a taxi from Fukuyama and found myself only 1/2 mile walk from Bingo Asakaya, very convenient to return to my hotel in Onomichi. I was so impressed with the place. The owner was very helpful. I chose a mixed vegetable curry which was perfectly spiced. Came with a vegetable soup and small salad. Dessert was vegan pistachio ice cream, tasty and refreshing.
I had arrived so hot and tired that it was a while before I noticed the birds. Very fun. Quiet jazz-type music played. I enjoyed visiting with a local woman who wanted to practice her English.
If you have time to get to this out-of-the-way spot, it’s worth it!

Pros: Delicious, fresh food especially vegetables!, Walkable to train, Clean, bright, friendly place

The Mont Blanc brought me to tears

Yes, the café is like 15min away from Fukuyama station by bus, but the trip was SOOOO worth it.

First of all the café is really cute: The people are super friendly and knowledgable about veganism and allergies in general. While the setup of the menu is a bit confusing, even if you can read Japanese, the staff is super helpful you and pointed out that what I ordered contained gluten in case I wasn't aware. Other food items are gluten-free or without any of the most "popular" allergens. So if you cannot eat X you can ask them to guide you.
It's a bit extra-weird that 80% is vegan and only one single dish contains meat.

The theme of the café are parrots and you can observe many different species who live in huge aviaries. Even the toilets are bird-themed :D. I did not ask if the birds are rescues or bought, though.

Back to the food: I had a macrobiotic lunch set and later a chestnut Mont Blanc.
During this Japan trip I ate _many_ macrobiotic lunch sets, many feature similar food. The set in café macro was no exception but the small dishes within were soooo much more flavorful, wow!

This already made me very happy.
Because I wanted to understand why Mont Blancs are so hip and also because it was the seasonal specialty, I ordered one. I opted for chestnut because autumn – and because the matcha variant was already sold out.
When the dish arrived it looked "naked". Like a cookie with a huge glob of cream. But then the waitress arrived again, wielding something that looked like a mix between meat grinder and hair dryer. With that she applied the chestnut-cream hair, put a chestnut on top of it and added a cute black (and gluten-free) ghost cookie.
The process alone sparked joy but the flavors, the depth!
I often try new sweets to learn something about them but am disappointed most of the time due to the lack of nuance in the taste... but this time I was blown away and had actual tears in my eyes. The taste was THAT GOOD and complex.
I was heart-broken that I didn't find this gem earlier as we had to leave Fukuyama the next day.

I'm already pondering how I can sneak in a detour to this café into our next Japan trip...

How to get there:
There's a convenient bus stop (Kodomo Katei Center-mae) directly opposite of the café, you just have to walk a few meters to the next bridge to cross the river between the street and the café. Also the entrance is on the non-river-facing side of the building.

Otherwise there's also a JR station (Bingo Akasaka) 1km away.

Delicious and best parakeet view in japan

We had a wonderful time at the cafe/restaurant, 5 minutes by JR from Fukuyama Station. I had the hamburger and half a hot dog. Hot dog wasnt that creative, but the burger was really good. As dessert we had a mont blanc, that is prepared at your table. Really fancy!
