Small Cute Cafe - Edit
First of all, make sure you have plenty of time, the café is run by just one person.

Great place and healthy - Edit
Beautiful cafe, beautiful food. It opens at 1200 noon however, not 1100am as mentioned here.

Worth the search - Edit
This one proved a little tricky to find but it's there, 10m from the intersection of blocks 9, 10, 11 and 8. Some of the block markers are hard to see or aren't where you'd expect (because a building has been replaced by a ground level car park, for example) and sometimes it's easy to miss a lane that divides the blocks, especially as block 8 is the smallest block in Meizancho. This area is interesting as it looks to be in transition from post-war buildings to modern ones so there are mostly 2 storey dwellings.
Read moreAnyway, the restaurant was small, but seated 10. The host was welcoming but busy as she does everything herself. The place is interestingly decorated with all sorts of little things, there were various children's books, and soothing music played softly.
There is a set meal (it might change from day to day - not sure) that avoids GMOs, refined sugar etc that included a soup, rice and an assortment of accompaniments. Although we weren't familiar with them all (and the owner was too busy to trouble by asking), all of them tasted great and were quite different from each other with different tastes and textures. Some were a bit different from those served elsewhere. Quantity wasn't large but quality was excellent.
Well worth having to go around the blocks a couple of times to find!

Limited menu, but good set meal - Edit
Great vegan set meal with excellent flavors. Most of the dishes were new to us, which made the experience even more interesting and fun. Likely the only vegan restaurant in Kagoshima, and absolutely worth a stop when returning from Sakurajima. 🌱

Amazing vegan set meal - Edit
Quiet cafe run by such a friendly lady. She chatted a long time as did some of her other japanese customers about the food. They put up with my basic Japanese. All the food is organic.
Read moreThe lunch set meal food is amazing as was the brown rice coffee. I wanted to go back today but she closed early so I missed dinner there.
She went vegan after watching Dominion. I am so sad I missed it today.

Must visit place in Kagoshima - Edit
The Cafe is beautiful and cozy, especially on the rainy days I have had in the city. Nagako-san, the owner, was super welcoming and makes a wonderful organic set menu, which includes a vegetable soup. There is a selection of drinks included on the menu, in my 2 visits I have tried the fermented rice and chai latte (with soy milk of course).
Read moreThe place is full of beautiful ceramics and at a certain time the short-tailed cat comes to visit :-)
The opening hours can be very flexible, so make sure to contact the cafe in advance. Cafe Indigo is currently the only fully vegan place in Kagoshima (November 2024), so a must-visit for vegans who want to support vegan businesses.
Arigato gozaimasu Nagako-san!

Wonderful and homely - Edit
This is a tiny cafe off the beaten track run by a very sweet lady, alone.
Read moreA set menu is on offer which includes a variety of small dishes, both sweet and savoury, and a savoury soup. It also includes a drink, alcoholic or not.
The food was amazingly good and a real insight into what seemed to be a more authentic Japanese-style way of eating. The owner was extremely attentive and helpful, albeit with very limited English, but it was a real pleasure to have visited.
I would 100% recommend a visit to Indigo Café of you’re in Kagoshima, although keep in mind it only has three tables so you may need to book or wait for one to become free.
In addition the price was great at 1,800¥ per person (around 10GBP).
Pros: 100 vegan and healthy food , Attentive and friendly service , Small and intimate location
Cons: Very few tables so space isn’t guaranteed , Menu items seem to be mainly chosen by the chef

A delicious mix of delightful flavours - Edit
Cosy surroundings, nice atmosphere, friendly and efficient service. Lunch was a set menu of rice, soup and about 10 small side dishes on one plate. A wide and delicious variety of flavours in Japanese style. Price was about 1400 yen. Extra for cakes. 100% vegan.
