So delicious

We didn't had a reservation, came for Lunch and directly got a seat. The vegan Set Menu was soooo good, it was nice to experience all the different flavors and it was made with so much love since everything was arranged in so many details. I especially liked the Tofu, the nice lady also explained to us how it is cooked and what makes it so special. The set was also inexpensive for the amount of food and the high quality.

Very good

Very good option in Kamakura.
We had the Koya tofu lunch which doesn’t need a reservation like the other shojin teishoku lunch.
A bit pricey for the amount.

Solid Buddhist set meal

We were struggling a bit for food in Kamakura as a lot of places seemed to be closed or had incorrect opening hours, so we were glad to get in here shortly before it closed.

The vegan set meal was quite expensive compared to others we had later on, but the quality of the food was very high and the staff were very attentive.

I think we were mainly just glad to find somewhere open for us.

Pros: Accurate opening hours, Friendly staff

Tasty Traditional Vegan Japanese Food

Located right outside Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine makes Cafe Guri convenient as well as delicious. As soon as we walked in, the staff asked if we were vegetarian and showed us the vegan meal option. There’s only one choice, but it’s a delicious one! All the food is served on traditional Japanese lacquerware that they sell in the store. We had fresh vegetables and some of the tastiest tofu I’ve ever eaten. Although the selection isn’t large, the location can’t be beaten.

Pros: Convenient location., Traditional Japanese food made vegan., Staff were accommodating and spoke English.

Cons: Only one option.

Great Japanese vegan food

The vegan set here is a great way to try Buddhist style Japanese food for a decent price. Staff were friendly and you can check out some of the local craft as well. Tasty and healthy!

Nice veg food

Have few options for vegetarians but options are tummy filling and doesn't disappoint the taste buds too.
Vegetarians are handled with extra care. Why ll it be bad for you to get treated well when you are unique veggie 😉

A great experience

English below 👇

We’ve found that shoujin ryouri (traditional Buddhist vegan cuisine) is a hit with visitors to Japan. Even the most hardcore meat eaters seem to truly enjoy this uniquely Japanese cuisine.

So when three of our friends came from the US to visit, we opened up Happy Cow to look for a place to take them to lunch, and found Cafe Guri. This restaurant is located about five minutes from Kamakura station and is on the way to a major tourist attraction, the Tsurugaoka Hachinangu shrine.

Cafe Guri can be found inside the Kamakurabori Museum, a small museum dedicated to showcasing Kamakura-style lacquerware. All of the dishes used in the cafe are Kamakurabori, which is also sold in a small shop inside the cafe. The cafe is wide and airy with a nice, modern atmosphere.

Now, on to the food! We got the vegan Toki Gozen set for 1500 yen. This meal was as delicious as it was beautiful. The tofu was quite possibly the best I’ve ever had in my life. Even my three decidedly non-vegan friends seemed to truly enjoy it. Afterwards one of them said, “I ate all that food and I don’t feel heavy or anything!” Yeessssss. 😙

The service was very nice, with English spoken, and they even brought out green tea for us at the end. I recommend this restaurant wholeheartedly, to both residents and visitors of Japan.

Amazing Japanese vegan food served using traditional carved wooden lacquerware.

One of the best vegan dishes I’ve ever had. They use seasonal local produce to create authentic Japanese “Buddhist” food that is balanced and flavourful. The owner is super friendly and is happy to offer advice on the area. The owner can speak some English and even offers an English menu. They serve their food using traditional carved wooden lacquerware (kamakura-bori) an art form which originated from this kamakura region. The chopsticks, bowls, trays etc are all sold in a store section inside the building at an extremely reasonable price considering the craftsmanship and cost of materials needed to make these items. There is even a small museum on the third floor which for a small entry fee (you can get a discount if you show your receipt from eating at the cafe) you can see more kamakurabori works which date back centuries. This place is a must if you truly have an interest in learning and experiencing the rich culture and history of the kamakura region.

Pros: Extremely friendly staff, Delicious and authentic Japanese food, Amazing price for quality of food

Shoji Ryori lunch

A five-minute walk from Kamakura Station, Cafe Guri serves a vegan Buddhist -style set lunch for $15. The cafe is on the ground floor of the Kamakurabori Museum (exhibiting and teaching the traditional art of lacquer ware) , and the meals are presented on typical lacquer trays and bowls. A veggie burger set is on the menu too --I didn't try it ---but the lunch set I had was flavorful , with adequate portions, quickly prepared and served with a smile. Various teas, coffee, sake and other drinks are on the menu, as well as sponge cake and non-vegan sweets.

No reservations are necessary for the lunch service that starts at 11:30AM. The museum and cafe are closed on Mondays. Many casually dressed customers were there for lunch or cakes and tea/coffee.
Location : on the boulevard leading to Tenmangu Shrine, in the modern building "Kamakurabori Assembly Hall." Also has a sign in English "Kamakurabori Museum."

Pros: No reservation necessary, Vegan , traditional Japanese dishes , Friendly and quick service

Cons: Lunch only, Closed Mondays
