Non-veg

Serves meat, vegan options available. Special dietary requirements can be requested, veg options are very limited, but has a vegetarian Mediterranean's Goat Cheese dish which could possibly be made vegan by omitting the cheese (which leaves the roasted veggies and hummus - ask if the flat bread is vegan). Has specials on the board, and, at times, they are vegan, including a cream of pumpkin soup. Also has soy milk. The restaurant is attached to Bowes Museum that was built by a relative of the Queen Mother in the style of a French chateau (worth a visit in its own right). The cafe can be accessed without having to pay the entrance fee to the museum. Open Mon-Sun 10:00-16:30.

Soup and a sandwich

Pleasantly surprised that there were vegan options - not a huge selection but a tasty sandwich and homemade soup of the day. Also oat and soya milk available as well as dairy free yoghurt and ice cream. Friendly and pleasant service as well.

Friendly staff but no vegan options

Still no vegan options and if you ask for a vegan dish, they’ll come up with something very tasty but not enough - so you’ll have to go into the town, where there are loads of vegan options and places...
It’s quite expensive but it’s inside the museum and the staff is very friendly.

Pros: Friendly staff, Cosy seating area

Cons: No vegan options

Expected better

For vegetarians, there is only one main course (Mediterranean goat's cheese) and for vegans there is nothing on the menu (I was told that the flapjack was made with margarine not butter, but they couldn't tell me whether or not this was dairy free margarine), however there was a special on the board "cream of pumpkin soup" and I was told that this was vegan - this arrived with butter which I gave back. They did, however, have soya milk. Because of this listing I would expect better knowledge and availability of vegetarian and vegan food, however, I don't feel that this venue qualifies for inclusion in the guide since it offers little more than any other cafe or pub would be able to offer in the area.

Pros: Soya milk is available, Service is competent and staff were helpful

Cons: Relatively expensive for a cafe, Not significantly better food availability than ot
