Awesome place - Edit
A charming place with lots of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free menu options to choose from. The service was good for a Sunday at 10am. The wait staff were friendly and very accommodating. The fruit salad with mint was amazing. The gluten free vegan pancakes were moist, delicious and very fulfilling. A most visit if you’re in Old San Juan and looking for a place to eat.

Amazing spot - good menu, good location, pricey but worth it - Edit
This is a great find in the old city. It is right at Plaza Colon, with a nice, mid-to-upscale atmosphere. A sizable vegan menu (labeled!), which includes an incredible vegan mofongo. It's a little pricey (the mofongo was ~$21) but it was absolutely delicious. I would definitely go back!

LOVE this place - Edit
The service is slow as ,molasses but friendly and accommodating - very kind servers and kitchen staff who are just so sweet. We went for lunch one day and had the empanadillas, a green salad (with a delicious mango vinaigrette!) and the vegan mofongo - wow, everything was amazing! Their lemonade and herbal infused non-alcoholic beverages were also fresh and wonderful, especially the ginger mint.
Read moreWe also went for dinner one night and had the Guava loaf which was phenomenal! Got a green salad and a side of rice, beans and sweet plantains. I also had the sangria which was delicious but deadly😉very strong! I really wanted to try the vegan dessert but we were stuffed.
This place is pricey but totally worth the splurge.
Pros: Vegan menu, Delicious food, very friendly staff
Cons: slow service, pricey, Great location

Lots of good options - Edit
There is an entire section of the menu marked vegan. A few vegan deserts as well but you'll have to ask. Only two GF/V options but I had both of them and they were delicious.

Food is not good - Edit
The food is super super bland , the meatloaf is chopped up cold tofu with barbecue sauce poured over . The tofu scramble was just tofu cut up and warmed with turmeric powder . Stay away from these two dishes

Few, but Tasty - Edit
Update from April 2019: things have gone downhill since my last visit; menu still has vegan options, but they aren't as good. Veggie loaf is now just slices of tofu with bbq sauce for 20$ & salad was basically just iceberg lettuce. I hope this was just a bad night, so I'm leaving as 4 stars, but be warned. That said, PR is still not that vegan-friendly, so this is at least a place with multiple vegan options.
Read moreFormer review from Sept. 2013:
There are a decent number of dishes (at least 6 entrees) in the Vegetarian section of the menu, but some elements may be non-vegan - you'll have to ask. Fortunately, my waiters on both visits were fluent in English and understood "vegan" so was able to identify these for me.
I enjoyed their dinner and lunch (once each) - would've eaten there more, but was staying out on a resort near Luquillo, a bit far from Old San Juan.
If you want to try vegan versions of traditional Puerto Rican foods (e.g., mofongo), this is the place for you. I had a Veggie Guava loaf and one of the tofu dishes (I forget which), which were both tasty, along with at least one substitute for non-vegan side. The atmosphere is nice, kinda artsy & relaxed, and it's near the center of town, including a square that features frequent performances.
FYI, if you're vegan and you want to eat out (especially if your Spanish is bad), this is a great option to have, as the island is not very vegan-friendly.
Note: this is from my visit in September, 2013 (getting to this review late).
Pros: atmosphere, nice, vegan-knowledgeable staff, tasty, traditional dishes
Cons: parking is tough (Old San Juan), pricey

Great vegan options in Old San Juan! - Edit
The restaurant may be a bit dated but it is friendly and vibrant and has a section on the menu clearly labeled vegan!! There are many options too. The tofu scramble I had was flavorful and delicious and appreciated the vegetables (unlike a lot of the other heavy vegan items I had in PR). Definitely recommend.

Delicious - Edit
The food and service was amazing. I loved that there were gluten-free and vegan options on the menu. The use of root vegetables in “mock” meat plates instead of soy products is genius. I will definitely be returning next time I’m in Old San Juan. I ate the vegan “bbq” loaf and it was delicious!

Delicious food! - Edit
We had lunch at the Cafe Berlin and it was gorgeous! The portion sizes are huge and the food just tasted so good. There are plenty of vegan options (about half of the menu is vegan!) and the food is a mix of typical Caribbean, Puerto Rican and international flavours. The service was also excellent and the frozen mango mojitos we had where refreshing and delicious. Unfortunately I got a kind of scratchy throat from the mashed malanga.

Authentic Food Veganized! - Edit
Sometimes, finding vegan food that is authentic to the place your visiting can be tough. Cafe Berlin hits the nail on the head! My husband and I split the Criollo Tofu and Veggie Guava Loaf and both were fantastic! The guava loaf was sweet balanced by the side of malanga. The Criollo Tofu had a slight kick with the yummiest plantains I’ve had in a while. Our fantastic server Steven said that they host brunch from 9-3 during the week. We’ll definitely be back.

Pretty good - Edit
Had a vegan section of the menu. Food was decent, but not great. We did try mofongo as a side for the first time which was pretty good but expensive ($7 for a side). They seemed to attract mostly cruise ship passengers. Our lunch bill was ~$65 for two sandwiches, a side of fries, a side of mofongo and two sparkling waters.

TONS of options, VERY expensive - Edit
An entire section of the menu was labeled as vegan! It was very upscale, but we are outside. When we went there was only one server so it took a VERY long time to get food, and the meals were quite expensive, usually upwards of 15 dollars, and my meal was 20. I do reccomend it though!

Awesome - Edit
Me and my boyfriend came back to this restaurant 3 times. It is delicious! We had the vegan breakfast (awesome) the sesame tofu with pesto rice (my favorit), the vegan Pasta (not the best I had), the vegan Mofongo (keeps you satisfied for the rest of the day) and the vegetarian tacos (he really liked them). We even got the tofu rico wrap and the vegan burger to go for our trip today to the rainforest because we liked the food there so much. We were a little disappointed by the vegan chocolate cake but all in all it is a really really great restaurant. The interior is also very nice and the service was friendly too. Ah, and try the rum punch!

Best Mofongo We Had - Edit
Cafe Berlin is located in old San Juan, so we planned to go here for lunch while exploring that area.

Oh gosh! I don't know if I'll remember all of them.
Read moreEl Punto Vegano is a vegan restaurant that has rotating items, they have mofongo sometimes. We had one in El Yunque - at some random place on the side of the road, it wasn't on the menu, but they said they'd make me a vegan one. One in Vieques, I think. And another at Oceano in San Juan (*very* nice restaurant on the beach, but the mofongo wasn't very good)

Great Food! - Edit
Food was so good we had to come back multiple times. Came here for breakfast and dinner twice. We first came here on Sunday for brunch. They did not have the vegan french toast, but the vegan breakfast was very good and worth coming back for another meal. On our second visit we had an amazing dinner with delicious cocktails. So glad we got to try vegan mofongo! None of their desert options were vegan, but they improvised and made us a desert of plantains with a sweet cinnamon maple glaze. It was so amazing we came back again. Great location in Old San Juan.
