fast, cheap and yummy!

Hands down best black bean burger in town! Made in house and served the best fresh French fries (best in Tallahassee). Tofu fajitas are a pleasant surprise and very tasty. You can't beat chips and salsa for $1!

Pros: cheap, fast

Cons: service so-so

Bland, canned, and sad.

I chose Cabo's Island Grill and Bar because I was travelling with my NV SO and I felt it was necessary he get a 'good' meal in for the 6 hour drive home. HappyCow reviews mentioned good vegan options here and it has hundreds of good omni reviews. Sadly, neither of our meals were good. The exception was a stand-out side salad that, honestly, I should have ordered. That thing had peppers, carrots, onions, mushrooms, croutons (not sure if vegan), cucumbers, a quarter of a tomato, and a sprinkle of sunflower seeds over a bed of greens. Very fresh, colorful, and tasty (according to him and he doesn't even like salad).

My meal was a tostada. I felt really confident in my order because when I asked about vegan-friendly dishes, the server really knew what she was talking about. As I ordered the tostada, she herself said 'without cheese', add corn.

I knew coming here that I would have a sub-par dinner. I just expect it from non-vegan restaurants. I expect my food to be unseasoned, bland, boring, etc. Worst case scenario, my expectations are met and I'm no longer bothered by it. Unfortunately, today was a 'catastrophic case scenario'...

I ate some bits off the top at first and, as expected, it was unseasoned canned black beans, unseasoned canned sweet corn, lettuce, diced tomatoes. There appeared to be green specks sprinkled on it as well as a dusting of something red all over the plate. The red was paprika. Not smoked even, just paprika. It was really weird and added nothing to the dish. I could not taste the green though I assume it was meant to be cilantro. As I have the OR6A2 gene, cilantro tastes STRONGLY of soap and since I couldn't taste it, I don't know what it was. I began picking apart the tortilla a bit and making it into chips, basically. After a few bites of that...I noticed something light brown on the plate...

Refried beans.

I lifted the tostada up. The entire bottom of it was covered in refried beans. Whelp, dinner is over, that was great, thanks but no thanks.

The server came by and I double checked with her that refried were not vegan, they are not, she apologized and offered to remake it and then took it. I didn't want another but okay. She returned, called the person that made it an idiot, and laughed the whole thing off.

Hm.

I ate the corn off it and pushed it away. The second plate lacked the weird paprika garnish and the 'green stuff'.

Overall, I would not recommend this place to vegan.

Pros: interesting decor, side salad, quick service

Cons: messed up order, strong fish smells, bland

Good Food

This place has long been known as a restaurant that accommodates vegetarians. Tonight I ordered the wet supreme black bean burrito - vegan style - and it was very good. It is a Tallahassee Institution which Is usually busy and it is a fun place to go. There are many vegetarian options but only a few vegan options.

Pros: Knowledgeable Staff, Good Food

Cons: Limited Vegan Options
