Oily & only for the adventurous, but beans are glorious. - Edit
I’m surprised there’s apparently no dedicated Burmese restaurant catering to farang in Mae Sai (at least not a vegan one), expecially while the border with Tachileik has been closed.
Read moreIn a pinch, try the bowls and buffet trays to the east of MaeSai Health buffet, on the same market street for what looks like Burmese dishes on display all day. Most of the bowls contain meat dishes, but the ones on front and containing various beans are very tasty protein options. Plenty of veggie stir-fry to be had here as well, and I was able to ask the lady who’s there every day which dishes don’t have meat.
I like to bring a container to fill up with noodles and a couple of dishes for 40 baht. I assume these are Burmese staples from a couple of day trip visa runs over the years, but they could just as well be hill tribe specialties.
On the other side of the street is usually a rolling cart with several other veggie stir fries and veggie chow mein, maybe the oiliest food in the world, but again, it works in a pinch.
Pros: dirt cheap, a nice break from Thai food
Cons: maybe actually dirty from sitting outside all day, hard to identify what's got meat in it
