Billy Bunter meets Danny Zuko - Edit
I've always been a little intrigued by this place assuming it was two separate places, a Greek restaurant called Athenas and a cafe called Bunters. When it appeared on Happy Cow I went to investigate and realised they share the same premises with Athenas taking over in the evenings. It's not Greek inside at all, rather more like a very traditional English tea room. They have a few vegetarian options such as mezze which could be vegan at a push. Everything looks freshly home made and well prepared. This place does have a good reputation in Hexham and is very popular with locals and visitors. However for vegans, improvements need to be made. Therefore, no vegan cakes for me today for just a cup of tea.
Pros: cosy, friendly
Cons: vegan choice

Yaroooh! (etc) - Edit
The rather oddly-named Bunters (does this perhaps aptly refer to one's waistline when one leaves?) is a little Greek-themed café with a couple of good vegan dishes; I recommend the giant beans. The hot chocolate comes highly commended (frothy with sprinkles!). The owners are very nice and speak good English. There were cakes labelled gluten-free when I visited but sadly none vegan at that time. There's a toilet, though you have to go on a magical mystery tour (upstairs) to get there. The interior is dark and quaint with art for sale on the walls; there's a nice outdoor seating area just across from the Old Gaol (with stocks and everything!). It was a great relief to find this place given that Hexham Tans was closed at the time I visited.
Pros: Yummy stew, hot chocolate, nice owners
Cons: No disabled toilet, no vegan cakes when I was there
