A tasty and fresh vegan lunch.

For some reasons, after listening to "not so good" comments from friends, after two years in Chiang Mai I finally decided to try this restaurant. The location is in a very busy and noisy road so not that pleasant. The menu doesn't have many vegan options and is a bit pricy. However, today I decided to go for something classic and I ordered a Yellow Curry. It came after about 10 minutes in a nice pot, served with a plate of brown rice garnished with black sesame seeds and a small portion of papaya and tofu salad on the side. It looked good! The curry had many assorted FRESH veggies in it and tasted so delicious! Though, I think there was too much coconut milk compared to others yellow curries I have tried in Thailand...But since I love coconut milk, I didn't mind at all! I spent 125 baht and left the restaurant very satisfied! I will go back for sure as I want to try their vegan cakes, which unfortunately they didn't have today!

Pros: Quality

Cons: Noisy location, Expensive

Very creative, delicious food

The food here is fantastic, every bite I ate put that look on my face like...'Oh my gosh that is sooooo good!' I had the Pad Thai, tofu skewers, the brown rice sushi rolls with avocado butter, two glasses of GOD (their specialty drink made from young leaf chlorophyll and coconut water) and the salad spring rolls. Every dish was very creative and had amazing flavor. Admittedly the dishes took a little while to come out but are people really in a big hurry in Chiang Mai? I wish the restaurant was a little bigger so that seating could be a little farther off the road but that is a minor gripe because the food is totally worth it.

Pros: Creative, delicious food, Not expensive in my eyes, Friendly service

Cons: Could be bigger, further from the road

Not many vegan options, but well made

The location in the Happy Cow Map was wrong on 29th March. The restaurant is easy to find, it is near the corner of Chayapoom road and Chang Moi road just out of the old town and canal.

There were not many vegan food in the menu. There was many foods made of egg. In the burger there is egg inside.

I chose tofu satay with peanut sauce, it was good. Then I also had stickyrice mango. My spouse got tau fou hou -salad which was not something you have in mind when you order salad with tofu. It was innovative, but the tofu was minced in small pieces and fried in oil and perhaps batter. You did not feel like eating tofu.

The foods are a bit unusual, which is fun when so many vegetarian thai food restaurants are so much the same. The food is well prepared. But not probably my thing as a vegan.

Pros: Well prepared, Unusual, Tasted good

Cons: not many vegan foods

Awesome Experience

A bit slow getting drinks and food out, and heavy traffic rushes by. All this is forgotten when you taste the drinks and food!!

Pros: Price, Taste, Selection

Cons: Location, Serving Time

New Location, Same Amazing Food

We were so happy to find that Brown Rice Restaurant is back in business. Having frequented it at its previous location many times, we found it today on Changmoi Rd, just around the corner from Mike's Burgers, and had an enormous lunch to make up for lost time. The chef is very clever and passionate about his food, which is incredibly delicious and artistically presented. Looking forward to many more sumptious meals at one of our favourite veggie restaurants in Chiang Mai. Thank you Duang, you are a master chef.

CLOSED. No Longer At The Samlan Road Location.

Visited the Samlan Rd address for lunch hoping to eat at Brown Rice. The location has closed and there is no further address posted. I spoke with the guesthouse next door and the lady there said they have moved location but she did not know where it had moved. I have been unable to locate the new address.

Cons: No Longer At Samlan Rd

Simply The Best

Need I say more ? . This place has be be the best food in Chiangmai. I have now tried nearly all the veggie places listed on HappyCow and also tripadvisor and i can report there is no finer diner than this place.

Food is mouth watering and unique and I mean everything on the menu.

Service is great.

Perfection takes time so if you are in a hurry or a person who cannot wait a few minutes for truly amazing food then this is not for you.

Cookery classes available also

Owner is a really nice man who loves food and cooking

You will not be disappointed.

Pros: food is orgasmic , everything wonderful , Owner a cutie

Excellent, innovative vegetarian cuisine

We visted Brown Rice Restaurant several times during our stay in Chiang Mai (which has a good selection of vegetarian restaurants) and this was definitely our favourite. We tried Chef Duang's fresh spring rolls, garlic fried mushrooms and crispy tofu salad, (Penang-style) red curry, the yummy Mussaman, the green curry and also stir-fried tofu and vegies. All the flavours were exquisite and the vegetables beautifully cooked.

Service is friendly, but can be quite slow as Duang prepares everything fresh in a tiny kitchen. However, hopefully this is sonething that can be remedied in time, as the food is definitely too good to miss.

When we visited there were also local Thais eating at the restaurant - another good sign! The chef, who has himself been a vegetarian for twenty-plus years, came out to take our order and talk to all his customers. His passion for good food and Vegetarianism is obvious.

Note that this premises will be closing down at the end of September and re-opening in another nearby location (with Health Food Store) shortly afterwards. We wish him the best of luck - as with the launch of the English-language version of his cookbook - and highly recommend his restaurant and his delicious Thai vegetarian food.

Pros: Excellent flavours, Fresh ingredients, well cooked, Friendly and pasionate service

Cons: Slow service at times, Currently, small premises
