They closed this location 😔 - Edit
I love Breakfast Republic and how they have many vegan options. I enjoyed coming to the Hillcrest location.

Delicious - Edit
They have a dedicated menu section for vegan options and had a vegan special on. Would highly recommend the vegan frittata.

Surprise vegan menu - Edit
Great food! We got the bene and the avo toast. The holland aisle was perfect. The potatoes were addicting. The avo toast was bland but passable. Don’t sleep on the seasonal kombucha. Today was lavender and it was perfect.

Small changes would go a long way! - Edit
Ordered Jammin Bennie and tres leches pancakes (on special). The Hollandaise sauce was very…mayonnaisey? It didn’t seem eggy or mustardy at all, and was a pretty big detractor for me 🤢 (and I love mayo!) The pancakes were great other than the syrup — tiny little cup of thick, fake maple syrup that did nothing to add moisture and only added more sugar to an already very sweet dish.

Great 5 stars - Edit
If we could we would give five stars. Four vegan options were enough for a great breakfast. Not oily or greasy. They have their own red sauce to substitute ketchup without too much sugar or salt. Nova 2 to Nova 4

Actually have egg substitute - Edit
This was one of my fav restaurants in San Diego. They actually had egg substitute (I think it was Just egg). Good portions, great taste, so happy. I was under a red tent so the pictures look a little red.

Vegan Breakfast - Edit
I have had Breakfast Republic a few times at other locations, and I was excited to see it open up in Hillcrest. Like other locations, the vegan menu is pretty extensive for a chain, including vegan meat and eggs. My boyfriend and I decided to try the breakfast burrito and the omelet. The omelet was tasty, but the burrito was delicious. The eggs were perfectly cooked, and all the toppings together worked well. For a side note, I removed the vegan meat and bacon, but that’s a personal preference. The rice and beans were very mediocre, the beans weren’t cooked all the way, and the rice was pretty “meh,” but it didn’t ruin the meal for me. The burrito alone was filling enough; next time, I will opt for no sides.
Read moreWe ordered for pick up, and the location was tiny but clean. There was lots of outdoor seating as well. The staff was friendly, and the kitchen followed the special request I made for my burrito. The only possible major downside is it appears they gave my boyfriend nonvegan butter even with an all-vegan order. My boyfriend isn’t vegan, so it’s not a big deal, but I would be curious to ask next time if they have vegan butter. If they do, then no problem; otherwise, I would avoid butter unless you clarify. Overall, there is other vegan breakfast in the area, but this is a solid choice.
Update 5/3/22: butter brought to the table is not vegan, even when ordering the vegan menu. Ask to clarify if there is vegan butter.
