Good local food vegan

Food comes in mixed plates. The small is plenty food. The food is very good and filling. Lots of rice and beans and potatoes. This was recommended by a local vegan. Worth the trip. Good food before drinking more rum punch. Not fancy but good service. Fried soy meat is very good.

Pros: Lots of filling food , Fried soy meat , Good service

Cons: Few green veggies

Lots of it but a bit bland

We agree with the last comment. There is a lot of food and it is all very filling but unfortunately it's all quite bland. Having said that the franks are ok and the fries aren't bad, just a bit oily.
So, if you are very hungry and at the "don't care point, I'll eat anything" then give it a go.

Pros: Filling, Fast, Cheap

Cons: Bland

Cheap filling food in the city centre

We found this by accident while looking for Pure Food Vegetarian Cafe (which we failed to do). We saw another cafe called "Roots Reggae Vegetarian Cafe" on the same road but when we got there it was closed. Luckily a guy selling veg saw us looking and when we said we were looking for the vegetarian food place, directed us down the alley to Bongo's!
This was a cheap and popular place with local people, serving filling mixed platters, burgers and hot dogs. It's a Rastafarian place and seemed all vegan.
Although the approach through the alley was not appealing, the people in the cafe were friendly. The cook came out to say hello and the guy serving was happy to explain what they had today.
We were served huge piles of food including veggie shepherd's pie, veggie stew, rice n peas, beans, etc. and sorrel drinks. It cost $30 Barbados for two!
The food wasn't amazing but we were impressed with the value.
The atmosphere was dominated by an enormous TV showing Tango and Cash with the volume up really high, with the tables and chairs arranged to face it - bit weird and not good for conversation but most of the customers seemed to be men on their own who seemed happy to have something to watch while they ate.

Directions:
If you find the City Centre Mall on Chapel Street, you notice there is a road which splits it in 2 halves. Go down this road and you will see a shop called "City Pets" on your right. Directly behind that is an alleyway. This is Cooks Alley (not shown on any map). Bongo Lights is about 20 metres down the alley. It's not a very nice alley
You may also notice a sign for "Roots Reggae veg Cafe" which is visible from the City Centre Mall car park and is just opposite the alleyway at ground level, but unfortunately this place had closed down.

Pros: Cheap, Quick, Filling

Cons: Alley!, Loud TV
