Cool atmosphere

Not a ton of vegan options, but I had the fried artichoke app and the taco salad with tofu wings and it was all bomb. The live music was great and the beer selection was awesome. They even had kombucha on tap.

Better for vegetarians

This place doesn’t have very many options for vegans, but does have a good selection for vegetarians! As a vegan I have only had 1 to 2 options and haven’t been overly impressed with the food. However, I think a vegetarian could have a good meal here.

Thank you for your review, Hannahdare. I was excited about the menu until I saw your review. I am very disappointed in Happy Cow for listing non-vegan menu items. I won't waste any more of my time on this one.

A locally-owned option in WV

One of the few places that knows what “vegan” means! We got a taco salad (no cheese) with tofu wings and avocado vinaigrette 😄 Fair prices and friendly workers! They also have a veggie burger.

Attn vegans:

Passing through town and decided to eat here bc of the other reviews on happy cow and read that there were a few vegan options. Got here around 2 pm and they were still serving brunch for some reason and the only “vegan” option was the veggie burger which only has a vegan patty, the bun and cheese are not vegan. So the waitress suggested putting the patty over a salad with their vinaigrette dressing. When the salad came out there was feta cheese on it so had to send it back and made sure to ask that a new patty would be made, I was assured it would. Second salad came out with remnants of feta cheese(underneath the patty) again which told me that they had tried to use the same patty with a new salad. So I just asked them to remove it from the bill and left. Waitress was sorry but still unacceptable. I’m just glad I made sure to search the second salad before eating it. This may have been an isolated thing but if you’re like me, I like to have peace of mind that I am not consuming animal products and I just didn’t have faith in this place.

Good for WV area

Good vibe and nice surprise for Charleston. Ordered buffalo tofu and tofu taco salad. Good. Not great, but good. Wished buffalo had more kick. And was surprised the tofu taco salad had long tofu strips instead of the crumbles. Hard to find vegetarian options in this area, so it’s nice to have a pleasant tasting option.

Pros: Vibe of restaurant , Fresh

great spot!

The crowd was lively with a progressive vibe that we might not have expected to find in West Virginia. There was one room for live music, another for dining. The waitress was charming and helpful. The food was delicious with generous portions. We ordered vegetarian (not vegan) and were impressed with everything - soup, veggie burger, entrees and desserts.

Pros: food quality, value for price

Very few vegan options

Very nice staff but few vegan options. Even the few vegetarian options have to be modified to be vegan. You can make the veggie burger vegan by asking for no cheese and substituting the brioche bun. FYI, the potato cakes have dehydrated milk in them.

Fewer vegan options

Unfortunately, recipes have changed in a non vegan friendly direction. The mock chicken and dumplings now contains dairy. The veggie burger was crumbly but flavorful. The decor is fun and the staff is friendly and helpful.

glad to find some vegan options in Charleston West Virginia

I drove by this restaurant last week and assumed it was close based on the exterior - I was wrong. There's parking in the rear and once you enter the restaurant it's a beautiful interior. I had the tofu chicken wings and the vegan burger. Both of which I greatly enjoyed. I'm in town for several weeks and was happy that this happens help me find someplace to eat with vegan options. I plan to return tomorrow night is they have a vegan special on the Weekly special menu. I'm thankful that I found this app, because it has led me to several restaurants I would not have found otherwise that were able to provide me with vegan options while traveling.

Disappointing

I had high hopes based on previous reviews, but I found Bluegrass kind of disappointing. We ordered the tofu wings as an appetizer - they were very good. I ordered the veggie burger, which is vegan, but w/o the bun as I'm gluten free. The burger itself was tiny, with one piece of lettuce and small tomato. It was supposed to have carmelized onions, which was the main reason I ordered it, but I just got plain old onions. Ordered the house salad with it, which had cheese on it (can't remember if I missed it on the menu or if it wasn't supposed to). But I asked for a new salad w/o cheese and never received it...eventually just - very hungry - left as we were in a hurry. The veggie burger was $12, which also seemed very expensive. Maybe just a bad night but I won't be back.

Pros: Tofu substitute available on many menu options.

Cons: Too expensive for what you get!

waitress from heaven.

We just had the nicest lunch! We both got the house made veggie burgers with tomato chutney, which were delicious, they were made of chia seeds, quinoa, carrots, and some other good stuff. We also got the tofu "wings" which were strips of breaded tofu, the breading was really flavorful and crunchy. We dipped them in the spicy ketchup.
The place is cute and rustic looking, filled with artwork, and our waitress was a freakin doll.

Great food, great beer

We ate dinner here in late May, it was a great meal after a long day of travel. The food was a big hit with our 2 small kids, they have a good selection of local beers. The server was very helpful with choosing vegetarian options. There was a band in the front room at just the right volume for listening but still being able to converse.
Unfortunately they do not have the veggie burgers at the moment, hopefully they will next time we are there!

Pros: Food is very good, Helpful stuff

Cons: none!

a gem

The Bluegrass Kitchen is a gem in an area that is not very vegetarian friendly. For us, it was like finding a river in the desert. The vegetarian / vegan menu items that they do have are really good quality, fresh food. I've probably tried most of the vegetarian options now in our travels through that area, and enjoyed everything. We don't eat the processed stuff that passes for food at Denny's, so this was a real find for us.

Pros: made from scratch, quality ingredients, knowledgeable, helpful staff

great evening :)

Grabbed a late, light weekend dinner here and got the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer, unique and yummy.
I especially loved the art and things to read, I never got bored of looking around. Keep it up, Bluegrass!

A Unique Restaurant with a great veggie burger

They make their veggie burger from scratch, and the waiter said it had taken them a few months to figure out how to perfect their vegan recipe. My partner ordered it and it was quite tasty!

They prepare all their food fresh, so be prepared to wait awhile.

My biggest complaint about the menu is that it seems very heavy on the dairy. I ordered a breakfast burrito, described as "seasoned beans, scrambled organic eggs, cheese"..... When it came there were almost no beans and it was like a giant pocket of melted cheese.

But if you order the veggie burger without the cheese on top, it is an easy vegan option.

Pros: one of a kind, friendly waitstaff, a few tasty, fresh vegetarian options

Cons: very heavy on dairy, long wait for food
