Failed to fulfil its promise - Edit
There is no denying that The Blue Anchor is most certainly one of the most picturesque pubs that you will find in the Cardiff / Barry area with its thatched roof and with some parts of the building dating back to 1380. Having seen some glowing reviews, I thought it would be a good place to take a couple of carnivorous friends who were visiting as well as being able to eat well myself with the promise of there being a good vegan option available.
Read moreThings got off to a bad start when the soup with crusty bread starter (clearly marked as vegan on the menu) arrived with pats of butter and when requested I was told that sorry they do not do any vegan spread. While seemingly quite petty that doesn’t really inspire much confidence it what was to follow.
The nut roast when it eventually arrived was okayish but like many such offerings quite bland with the accompanying cranberry sauce giving just enough flavour to nearly rescue it. Unfortunately, the accompanying vegetables for all three of us arrived in communal serving bowls which when sharing with non-vegans can be a bit problematic.
The final ignominy was when we received the final bill only to discover that we had been charged over £30 for drinks that we had not ordered with the bill only being very grudgingly corrected when we queried it.
All in all I don’t think I will be going back there again
Pros: Picturesque building
Cons: Poor awareness of Veganism, Limited choice, Chaotic service

Sunday Lunch - Nut Roast - Edit
The Blue Anchor offered a pleasant Sunday lunch experience, with a thoughtful nod to vegan diners. We visited for Mother’s Day, the menu offered a soup starter, a nut roast main, and vegan ice cream or sorbet for dessert.
Read moreI stuck with just the main, and the nut roast itself was genuinely tasty, complemented by a colourful medley of vegetables and both roast and new potatoes. The potatoes were easily the highlight, well seasoned and perfectly cooked, they lifted the whole plate.
That said, the limited choice leaves little reason to return. With only one vegan main on offer, I’ve already had the full experience. Dessert options were minimal, and while I’m grateful any were available, a touch more variety would go a long way.
Still, The Blue Anchor is a solid pick if you’re dining with meat-eaters, thanks to its inclusive menu and cosy atmosphere. Overall, a satisfying meal.
