Serves meat, vegan options available. Menu is meat-based but if you call ahead, the chef (owner) will prepare something vegan meal for you. Several small items on the menu can be made vegan by removing cheese. Dinner starts 5:30pm. Open Mon-Sun 5:00am-11:30pm.

Great experience

I had been to the Black Trumpet before with my girlfriend, and we called ahead for them to prepare us a vegan meal. It was a modified version of their vegetarian dish, and was excellent. We decided to bring two of our newly vegan friends here, and called ahead again. This time, Evan (one of the owners, and head chef) prepared us an incredible 4-course meal. The Black Trumpet uses many ingredients directly from Evan's garden, as well as wild mushrooms that the staff forage for in southern Maine. Evan even delivered each dish to us and gave an explanation. I would say that we got the best treatment in the entire place. The Black Trumpet is very much not vegan, and being in Portsmouth, has many fish/meat-centric dishes (and foie gras on the menu, unfortunately). However, it was awesome to get a top-tier vegan meal from a master chef in what may be one of the better restaurants in the Seacoast area.

Pros: Excellent food, Attentive staff, Cozy atmosphere

Cons: Quite a few non-vegan items on the menu
