Only Okay

I can’t really recommend this place, honestly, based solely on the food. The staff and venue itself are lovely, and it’s great to see that they have a dedicated vegan menu. However, the options are very limited and not tasty. I had panzanella to start - it wasn’t at all what I expected (a salad with fried bread), it is sweet fried bread served with a bland tomato sauce. For main, I had the cauliflower tempura with sticky rice. Another guest in my party had the vegetable stir fry. Looking at both, you can see that they are almost identical, the only difference being a few pieces of tempura cauliflower. I was really looking forward to the sticky rice noted on the menu, but it was the same white rice served with the stir fry. The tempura was overcooked - being too hard to cut through and painful to chew!

Another guest in my party is pescatarian and had the garlic mushrooms and macaroni cheese. She said the garlic mushrooms didn’t taste like garlic (just creamy mushrooms) and that the macaroni was fine.

I feel bad leaving this review, but I left disappointed and hungry and wouldn’t want others to have the same experience.

It’s also worth mentioning that the restaurant itself is not overly accessible. We had a buggy with us and obviously had to lift this up 2 flights of stairs to get up/down.

Go here quite often, nice atmosphere. Usually for just a quick vegan snack

Pros: A vegan menu available , Friendly staff

Cons: Just a few more vegan options would be nice

Good vegan options

I've eaten at the Birchtree a couple of times and really enjoyed the food. I've had the panzanella to start, cauliflower tempura main, lemon sorbet and a vegan lemon cake and ice cream that they had on the specials. It's all fairly basic food, but it's very well done and really tasty.

Pros: Obvious vegan section on the menu, Affordable, Very tasty
