Organic Indian food in the heart of Salzburg

This is the only place in town where you can find organic, original North Indian food - vegan.
The owner, Suresh, is a very nice guy and good cook.
Lunch consists of only one dish (rice + dhal + vegetables) and if you like soup.
The main dish (without soup) costs 7,50€.
You can sit outside in summer. Inside there are I guess max. 20 sits, simple but nice.
Cakes are only partially vegan.

Pros: good food quality (organic., regional), location, you inmediately feel welcome

Cons: a bit more expensive now, poor food choice

Not spicy enough...

Small and cozy restaurant with an Indian-inspired interior and a very relaxed atmosphere. There is also a shelf with some vegan food and Indian specialities that you can purchase, like a little shop. Service was not that good, we needed to wait a little long although there were not so many people in the restaurant. I liked the food, it tasted good and was also good value, although I would call it "Indian-inspired" - it was not like the food in other Indian restaurants I have visited, and not spicy at all.

You can choose your dish from a menu or take the daily meal. In the menu, it is indicated which dishes are vegetarian and which are vegan - very convenient! We had spring cabbage and tofu in mild mustard leaves curry sauce, pumpkin, brocolei and quinoa in mild herb sauce, chick peas dal and fennel, zucchini & oat flakes soup. As said above, it all tasted good, but it was not spicy and some of it didn't taste Indian at all.

Pros: Clearly labelled menu, Friendly atmosphere, Good value

Cons: Slow service, Food not spicy at all

Depressing

Very bad atmosphere. Too dark, walls too red, too esoteric... no music, just the sound of the fridge. Waitress was okay, but in my opinion not polite enough. Meal was good, bit extraordinary, but really spicy. Even my omnivore boyfriend was satisfied. We might come back, but won't sit inside.

Pros: spicy, not expensive

Cons: atmosphere, waitress

Food was OK but needed more flavours

I ordered a Thali and although it was a reasonably good portion at a good price I found the food a bit bland and I had to add lots of lime pickle to give it a boost. I'd say that it wasn't anything special but it filled a hole and if I wanted that I'd go again. Service was a bit too "quick" and not that friendly.

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Bland food

The spicey place that wasn't spicey.

The little shop has some good choices. Though I questioned why they were selling Ecover and PG tips. The latter especially because they're owned by animal testers Unilever.

The Main course was nice, we had the special for the day. That was under-priced, given how large the portion size was. However, the samosas with mango chutney were bad. The filling wasn't tasty and the chutney was way too sweet. Sweeter than a cake we had had the same day from another place about 5 minutes away. They were actually somehow more expensive.

We have read that the waiter tried to overcharge some people on another review on this site. Well ours tried to charge us €15, until we pointed out that it was €7,5 for the main, €8 for the samosas and €3 for the drink we had.

Overall, I have to give this 2/5 because the samosas just weren't up to scratch and the waiter was absent-minded. However, the main course was definitely nearing the 4/5 mark.

not worth it

I am always extremely supportive of any businesses that cater for vegans, but this just didn't cut it.. :(

We got there around lunchtime, and it was quite crowded. I ordered tofu with ramsons and rice, my boyfriend had snitzel or something of the sort. Our meals came with standard curry basmati rice and veggie stir-fries on the side. The vegetables were all gray, mushy and overcooked, as if they cooked everything in the morning and then just left it there in a warm pot the whole day. "Organic orange juice" tasted synthetic and extremely dilluted, and on the bottom of the glass you could see undissolved orange powder clumps, which was just awful. Even though the portions were generous, it just wasn't worth 22eur we paid. And, like with the previous reviewer, there was no bill AND the waiter cheated us for 1.5eur AND we were stupid enough to leave him a tip..

I'd rather have a falafel or a cheese-less pizza for less next time.

Pros: large portions, location

Cons: overcooked food, dishonest waiter, fake juice

Authentic Food in a quiet location

My husband Matt and I were in Salzburg in August 09 and we went to Bio Bisto Spicy Spices twice. The first time I ordered the paratha which came with 3 different curries. Matt had chapati with the same three curry dishes. We also had the vegan cake for dessert which was really nice. The second visit, we had a samosa to start and then the special which was 3 curries with rice. The food was tasty and the staff were really friendly and helpful. They had some good organic beers too.

Pros: friendly staff, quiet location, outdoor seating

Daily Specials!

Its a small Indian restaurant, but just grab a seat outside and order the vegan special of the day. That's what everyone does. There's also a small grocery wall inside where you can pick up some random vegan items.

Pros: vegan daily special, outdoor seating

A welcome respite from cheese and bread offerings

This place is cheap compared to surrounding restaurants (2 people fed for under 20 euro). The portions are large. The food is fresh. The daily special really changes daily. I know b/c my fiance & I went back everyday we were in Salzburg. Also, being dairy sensitive, I didn't worry about the food there. One caveat, you do need to enjoy Indian cuisine. No problem if you don't speak German. We loved it! 5 cows!

Pros: fresh, filling good food, large plate of food, variety of options

Cons: kinda small dining space

The Worst

We were so embarrassed to take our hostess in Salzburg here. The menu was bizarre, random menu items over a number of pages, most seemed the same. We finally just picked something each. Then he tells us he doesn't have two of the things we chose. So I picked something else. My "dal" came and was half chick-peas, which don't belong in dal. But the real surprise was the little worm crawling through my salad. I'm afraid of bugs, so let out a yelp. (Also, not real vegetarian!) It was awful. They took it back, but I couldn't eat at all. Our hostess's daughter refused to eat her food. The other two adults said it was OK, but strange tasting. The service was not nice even before the incident with the worm.

Also, I'm suspicious of the GUEST who keeps giving this place 5 cows. Hmmmmm. Stay away.

Cons: Bug in food

hm

We were 2 times in the Spicy Spices, as the first eating was ok (though we found quite expensive for the small portion). The second time we ordered a total different meal, but it was exactly the same and unfortunately I have found a black hair in the meal ... so whatever friendly they are it was quite disgusting and we will not go back there.

Palatable food

We had two of our meals here and we were quite satisifed with what they had to offer. We had some rice, chapati, dal (lentil curry), chana and some mixed vegetable curry. All of these dishes were quite good and sufficient. The dishes were all simple with no unnecessary masalas added and that was what we wanted. The guy, Nirmal, was friendly and flexible. He even cooked some chana with no added garlic at our request. Overall a pleasant experience.
This restaurant was located next to our Hotel, but this is some 10-15mins walk from old city. This restaurant is close to St.Sebastian cemetery, hence plan accordingly.

Pros: Great Food, Friendly Staff, Price

Cons: Location (Not Bad though)

More bland than Spicy Spices

After reading good reviews I was looking forward to eating at Spicy Spices, particularly as it's difficult to find vegan food in Salzburg. The 'English' menu was only in English in parts and the waiter spoke little English so we ordered and hoped for the best. We ended up with tofu in a curry sauce with two naan bread. The nann bread were quite odd, small and sweet, more like pancakes. The actual curry seemed as though it was just some sauce poured over some tofu - as if you choose your filling and then they pour the same sauce over whatever you have. The tofu wasn't very nice either. We couldn't finish the food and we usually aren't very picky! We decided not to even attempt dessert. We weren't given a bill, just told how much it was which was a little confusing as I'd also purchased some items from the shop so we couldn't work out exactly how much the meal was. It basically seems like a decent shop that has decided to serve food. They should have stuck to the shop.

Pros: Good shop, Nicely decorated

Cons: Not very good food, Menu not in english
