Serves meat, vegan options available. Restaurant specialising in Nepalese and local cuisine. The owner is Nepalese and has travelled extensively. Uses a combination of spices from across the Himalayas and imported curry powders from the Indian Sub-continent. There are around 20 vegetarian dishes on the menu, many of them are vegan or can be made vegan by using vegetable oil instead of butter which the owner is happy to do. The owner speaks excellent English and has a good grasp of dietary requirements. Let him know if you are vegan and he’ll help you order. NOTE: maybe closed/shut down - please verify and let HappyCow know. Open Mon-Sun 10:00am-11:00pm. During winter months opening times are variable.

Okay restaurant - Edit

This restaurant on the edge of the old town in Shangri-la has a pleasant atmosphere. They serve a mixture of Nepalese, Indian, and Tibetan cuisine as well as pizza. There are quite a few vegetarian Nepalese and Indian options, but only a couple of Tibetan vegetarian dishes. They have some nice homemade yoghurt and many drinks to choose from. It was okay overall, but it would have been nice if there were a few more vegan and vegetarian options.
The prices were a bit expensive, but this is expected in a touristy place.

Pros: Nice atmosphere, nice food

Cons: Not many vegan options, tourist prices

Decent option for vegans - Edit

The vegan options in Shangri-la are scarce to say the least. This meat restaurant has an English speaking owner so if you speak passable English too you can be very confident that you are getting something vegan. I can't speak for the western food options but the Nepalese curries are quite good. We ordered the Aloo Matar, the Dhal, the Veg Curry and the Parantha. All are usually made with yak butter so be sure to say no butter.
We ate here about 6 times in total. All the food is prepared to order so it can take up to 30 minutes when busy. Personally, the longer the food takes in a non-vegan place the more comfortable I feel eating it.
We got to know the owner pretty well during our time here. He said he will add more vegan options if customers ask.
At the time of writing this there are no Vegetarian or Vegan restaurants in Shangri-la.
