Lots of tasty vegan dishes, needs vegan desserts

[Update 28/3/19: I just found out that kam heong style dishes are usually cooked with butter. I was told at the time by the server that none of the dishes we ordered contained eggs or dairy but it's possible they didn't think about the use of butter for frying. I recommend asking specifically about butter or avoiding kam heong dishes altogether just to be safe.]

I suggested Beyond Veggie for a recent gathering with meat eaters and everybody ended up enjoying the food. The server was very friendly and clearly stated which dishes were made without eggs or dairy (of course we were gonna order vegan only psshhh).

We had the yam pot, vegetable curry, crispy oyster mushrooms with sesame dressing, crispy oyster mushrooms with Thai dressing, green beans, kam heong tofu (tofu fried with curry leaves, lemongrass, shallots and cili padi) and bitter gourd in black bean sauce. Dishes like these, when prepared well as they are here, help meat eaters realise that we can enjoy delicious food without harming animals. My friends commented on how nice everything was and by the end of the night, a couple mentioned wanting to reduce their animal consumption. Kudos to the kitchen for consistently turning out great food and helping to broaden minds and palates!

One BIG criticism I have for Beyond Veggie and similar plant-based eateries is that it's shameful not to include vegan cakes for dessert. Defaulting to items like the azuki with sago (hong tau soay) or ice kacang (not available anyway) is just lazy and unimaginative. It's 2019 and every single vegan YouTube recipe channel has some form of fantastic vegan dessert (cakes, pies, cheesecake, ice cream, cookies). If home cooks can create such excellent desserts without harming animals then there's absolutely no excuse for a professional kitchen not to match or exceed their efforts! Eggs and dairy are not necessary in tasty desserts. Bakers who are stuck in the past need to snap out of it.

And no soy milk for lattes or flat whites? Seriously, what kind of joke is this.

Repeat after me: It's the 21st century and harming animals for food is not necessary!

I'm being harsh with my review only because of the enormous potential for businesses like Beyond Veggie to convince people that plant-based nutrition is delicious and requires no compromise in quality and taste. Come on, Beyond Veggie, it's time to move beyond the status quo. Do that and take my money, please!

Pros: Plenty of good vegan dishes, Friendly service , Nice ambience

Cons: Needs vegan cake options, it's 2019!, Needs vegan cake options, it's 2019!, Needs vegan cake options, it's 2019!
