The best sushi I've had since going vegan - Edit
When my spouse and I visited Beyond Sushi this evening, the restaurant was packed, with just a few tables available, and it got even busier as time went on.
Read moreIn my pre-vegan days, I was quite the sushi and sashimi connoisseur. Only the freshest and softest, melt-in-your-mouth fatty tuna, salmon roe, squid, and sea urchin would satisfy me. As a Japanophile, I am really into authentic Japanese food, and the strong tastes that appeal to the American palate don't seem Japanese to me. Although the vegan salmon and tuna I had tonight can't compete with my recollection of the taste and texture of dead fish flesh, the sushis were put together in such a way that the overall taste and texture were highly reminiscent of authentic Japanese sushi. The effect is close enough to the real thing that there is really no excuse any more to hurt the lovely and intelligent creatures who live in the oceans, or to destroy the environment and our health.
We had the miso soup, which was delicious, authentic, and plentiful. The "salmon" sushi and "tuna" sushi were delightful, and I expect I will be dreaming of them until my next trip to New York. The salmon avocado roll and the rainbow roll were also excellent. The salmon roe sprinkled on top of the salmon avocado roll was so realistic that for a few moments I worried that I had eaten an animal product. The server reassured me that it was made with agar agar. The matcha ice cream, which I think was mochi-based, provided a lovely finish to the meal. When I went vegan eleven years ago, I didn't think I would ever have a meal like this again.
Like Coletta, Beyond Sushi is a vegan restaurant that doesn't feel vegan. A person can go in, order, eat, walk out, and not realize that they had vegan food at a vegan restaurant (if they don't listen to the server). I think that this is a valuable contribution to veganism. It shows people that they don't have to be tree-hugging hippies, nor give up the pleasure of eating at elegant restaurants, to be vegan. I am so thrilled with the work Chef Vaknin is doing. He is literally making the world a better place, and I am honoured to be a part of the adventure.
I hope Chef Vaknin will consider adding some non-alcoholic beers to the menu. Many of them are quite good these days, and they make life easier for those of us who don't drink alcohol any more. I don't believe non-alcoholic sake exists yet, but I hope I will be able to have it one day as well!

I found myself back at one of my favorite Vegan venues in all of NYC, this time for the Vegan/Vegetarian Meetup held here on March 12, 2024. As always, fine food with beautiful presentation, although I don't understand why brown rice isn't offered instead of white rice. I also need to mention, especially after having mentioned this previously: please turn down the music volume ! Conversing with those seated right next to me was equally as challenging as with those seated across from me. I really hope management takes heed and actually rectifies these two points.

Speaking of fire, I couldn't think of anyplace more perfect to satisfy my appetite and quench my thirst on this sweltering, hot afternoon in the concrete jungle, than this old favorite of mine. I say, "old" because it's been about four (4) years since I've been here, and I must say, I'm just as impressed as ever. I ordered the mocktail version of the Chili Mango Margarita along with the Beyond Sushi Classic, the Spicy Mang Roll, and the "Salmon" Avocado Maki Roll.
The Chili Mango Margarita was just what it sounds like: the perfect blend of spicy and sweet, and oh so refreshing!
The Spicy Mang and "Salmon" Avocado rolls were equally as good, with each having a distinct blend of flavors and textures, even with the ultra fresh ginger and wasabi smothered all over them (I do love wasabi, folks!)
I topped off the meal with Green Tea Ice Cream - because - summer! The portion was just right and balanced out the meal quite nicely.
Folks, if you've never been to Beyond Sushi, you've GOT to go, and as far as there being more than one location, I'm honestly partial to this one in Herald Square - it's spacious, with a good vibe, plenty of comfortable seating and excellent, attentive customer service. A win-win all around!
P.S. - I happened to be there until just after 5pm, when they turned down the lights (fine) and pumped up the music - a bit loud, if one is dining with others and wants to have a convo, IMO.

I think at least once a month I always say to my partner “gosh I could really go to NYC right now just to get vegan sushi.” Ever since I tried this place back in 2021, it’s all I think about! Every time I go to NYC which is at least once a year I have to stop here for lunch/dinner. It’s just so freaking good. The flavors are amazing and the drinks are great!

Read moreSince this is a Japanese restaurant, I've naturally ordered only the Japanese dishes from this place and have had a positive experience each time! Five Spice Chick'n is Mainland Chinese cuisine-- a surprising offering at this particular eatery. If it suits your taste, go for it!
The Shiitake Truffle dumplings are like comfort food to me, due to its deep "umami" / savory flavor and soft texture. Philadelphia and "Salmon" Avocado Maki rolls are classics that I personally enjoy if you want a dose of American flavors, and the Spicy Jackfruit Crab had a wonderful fruity-fiery flavor profile.
Don't miss out on the Pandan Cake or the Ube Cashew Cheesecake!

Food was amazing. Lots of plant-based fish and awesome bowls and plates! Nice big restaurant experience. Great servers and staff. However, we were interrupted too many times under our dining, and that made the experience feel quite rushed. We were afraid to get too much eye contact with the staff before they quickly were at the table to ask if everything is okay, and if we still think the food is okay.

The Dumplings with mushrooms barely have any fillings and it was too finely chopped. There is also too much crunchy toppings on the dumplings, which could be fried shallot but lack of flavor.
Matcha Affogato brought to me with the ginger cookie strudel (crumps). I showed the waite person and asked for it and when the waitperson brought it he insist the kitchen had added. But my dessert only has the vanilla ice cream and the green matcha. There was no ginger flavor at all. So User when Ames with everything I had. Actually the miso soup was okay.
Pros: 100% plant-based
Cons: Underwhelmed on taste and service

So close to Penn Station and so unique - Edit
We had a leisurely, delicious lunch at Beyond Sushi just before catching our train from Penn Station. It was great knowing we were just a few blocks away so we could bolt when the time came. Have never come across a totally plant-based sushi restaurant and so enjoyed every bite. Dumplings and rolls were all delicious.

Food was beautiful and well made. I ordered two different rolls and they were both nice. I do prefer more traditional rice rolls, so it was not the kind of food that I like most, nevertheless it's a matter of taste, so I am still giving them 5 stars.

THE BEST
The sushi is the star here, the zalmon texture is close to the organic life but the flavor was lacking, compared to other visits. The roll was good but it wouldn't be able to stand by itself without the soy sauce. The dark brown sushi was better overall, including the construction -many of my rainbow roll pieces came apart even before adding soy sauce- but still not an A, more like B- or C+. The sake and the dessert were by far the best out of the whole experience. The sake looked like lychee juice and the alcohol level was low, compared to other sakes I've had in the past, with a very delicate flavor profile. The cheesecake is better than the matcha ice cream, but if you do have room, order two! It's very creamy, tastes similar to ruby cacao, and is the reason any chocolate lover MUST order!
THE WORST
It is obviously not my first visit here and neither to their now defunct SoHo location, but the excellent menu and flavors keep us Vegan folks back. My very first visit was quite a memorable event... At other times the service has been at least warm enough to match the caliber of the food, but not now. The service was transactional at best, I had to ask for my table to be cleaned (they didn't, just picked up the dish) and pretty much he was either checking out his mobile or chatting with his colleague. The ambiance is blah, it needs a good playlist. The cook or whoever seems to be the link between the kitchen and the front of the house was more amiable in delivering the dishes than the server who took the orders. I'm not planning on returning in the foreseeable future.

Cons: Orders may take awhile, Very transactional service
