Lovely afternoon tea - Edit
There’s a dedicated vegan menu, so indulge your love of afternoon tea. If you have a reservation, skip the line at the entrance and head to the side entrance and proceed upstairs to the Belmont Room. There’s a large selection of teas from sister company Taylors of Harrogate, a familiar brand in grocery stores. Skip lunch and perhaps even dinner, as it’s a lot of food. There’s no air conditioning, so prepare yourself if you’re going on a hot day.

Nice vegan option for afternoon tea - Edit
They have a fully vegan afternoon tea available. It was tasty! Unlimited sandwiches which people seem to be too posh to ask for (I definitely got my money's worth 😂). It's nice, I would recommend 😊

Avoid the scones - Edit
I ordered the vegan scones (cream tea), the scones were burnt, small and flat. Texture was quite hard and dry. They were served with jam and some kind of 'cream?' but it tasted like sour cream/greek yogurt so was unfortunately disgusting on the scone. I ended up asking for vegan butter in the end which they provided, but I did think the 'cream' was very strange and the waitress didn't explain what it was either.
Read moreThe earl grey tea itself was disappointing average.
They do have a few other vegan options on the menu which I didn't try and may be better...
If you want cute photos, don't agree to sitting downstairs, there are no windows and it's quite dim and dark.
My (non vegan) friends thought the food was average but nothing special.
Pros: Clear menu labelling for vegan options
Cons: Bad scones :(, Expensive

Pretty Solid Vegan Meal - Edit
On this occasion I went with my grandparents when they were in York for the day and chose the butternut squash and sage gnocchi which was very yummy. There was plenty of sauce and the gnocchi itself had been cooked very well so it was nice and soft. But, they do ask if you want chicken with it when ordering, and as would be expected for Betty's it was pretty pricey.
Read moreI just checked the online menu and looks like you can now get vegetable gnocchi instead (still with option of chicken...). But you can also get a vegan English breakfast, avocado and aubergine on sourdough, vegan afternoon tea (which sounds pretty good), coronation chickpea sandwich, and Carrot Gugelhupf (which is a cake). So there's a decent selection of vegan stuff, and Betty's offers quite a nice and fancy experience.

Vegan afternoon tea - Edit
Fabulous setting and atmosphere, to be honest that’s what you go for. The vegan afternoon tea did not have to be ordered in advance and can be ordered for just one person. I had cucumber and yogurt sandwich ( yes yogurt) and avocado salad sandwich which was bland. Middle section was the scone. Absolutely awful, dry and sandy texture with weird speckles in it. I suspect it was gluten free. This was also served with yogurt???? And jam. Top layer was a pot of …… yes you guessed it , yogurt and berry sauce. While nice it was boring. There was a little carrot cake which was also dry and far too sweet. The best part was a chocolate mousse cube which was delicious 😋 Bettys blend of tea was lovely. My husband had the lemony gnocchi which was really good.

Quality tea room - Edit
I enjoyed the vegan breakfast, and the portion size was generous with plenty of toast. I have never had spiced aubergine "bacon" before. The staff are courteous and friendly. Vegan options are clearly marked on the menu, and this includes alcoholic drinks, which is helpful. There are limited options for vegans, though there is at least one option in every section except the ice creams. The food and drink is excellent quality and very pretty to look at.

Prebooked afternoon tea - Edit
I booked an afternoon tea spot the day before, and arrived the day of the tea to find they were prepared for my reservation. The staff were really wonderful. I felt well-taken care of. I recommend advance booking so you can be assured they have vegan items ready for you. Plus, if you pre-book, you get to go in the VIP entrance to the upstairs Belmont Room. My tea came with unlimited sandwiches and beverages. The cucumber sandwiches were especially good, in my opinion, and the scone and jam were really nice. The desserts, particularly the chocolate pillow with caramel, were extremely decadent. I had a great experience and left very full. Would recommend.

Worth it for the experience as it’s lovely and does live music. However, tea was very simple and the cream for scones wasn’t nice.

There is finally a vegan option! - Edit
Traditional café, which I've always avoided because of lack of vegan options, but they finally have a vegan scone. It's quite good, and there is coconut cream to go with it. Alternative milks are oat and soya. Probably not worth the wait for the vegan options.

Vegan afternoon tea - Edit
It's nice to be able to take part in the traditional tea rooms at Betty's with a vegan option for afternoon tea. The sandwiches and scone were delicious. The sweets/cake were nice but room for improvement. However, overall it's great that there is a vegan option and the service is great and the staff are very knowledgeable. Oat milk available for teas and coffees which is a big plus.

Got in early to avoid queuing and it was a very pleasant experience. Vegan options were clearly marked and pretty good value for money. I asked if they did a vegan afternoon tea but unfortunately not, though the waitress seemed very hopeful for the future!
