Great Food (When They're Open) - Edit
I loved The Veg Hub in Oakland, and once they closed there was a sandwich-sized hole in my heart that Better Chew has now filled. My only complaint is the inconsistency of when they're open. Currently it's the second time since they opened that they're now closed for an extended period, and I would prefer to give them my business than somewhere like Next Level Burger

The best thing about this place is that they make their own mock-meat in house using health conscious ingredients. They have an inspiring story about how the founder decided to start this vegan business. It’s not fine dining but it makes a good quick meal!

I’ve stopped here a couple times driving through and always stare at the menu wanting to eat all of it! Everything I’ve tried was fantastic: chicken jalapeño ranch, western rib eye, loaded fries, greens… The flavor and texture is SO much better than impossible/beyond/etc.! Friendly staff, big portions, great food, and they also sell better chew cheaper than at the grocery store. I wish this place were closer to where I live!

I made a day trip from SF via the Vallejo ferry (1 hr and $9.30 each way) to the grand re-opening today. It was very busy, but the owner greeted me warmly and sincerely asked for feedback. The 8 indoor tables were already full when I finished ordering a regular side of country boy greens, 3-cheese mac & chews, and steak & cheese fries. I was warned that the wait time would be about 30 minutes before my order would come out, but I wasn’t in a hurry. I ended up sharing a table with a woman who came in from Sacramento to partake in Chef Chew’s creations. (He’s catered events at her church in Hayward.) Everyone seemed really excited to be there, both customers and employees alike. The enthusiasm was contagious! I thoroughly enjoyed the food, and I can’t wait to come back for more of the menu. Of course, I couldn’t leave without getting a few bags of frozen meat substitutes (shredded chicken and shredded beef), so I paid for those on my way out since they’re 20-30% cheaper here than at Whole Paycheck.

What an utter disaster… - Edit
We were the only people there, yet waited 45 minutes after ordering 2 sandwiches, Brussels sprouts and a kids meal. The single worker didn’t seem to have any idea what he was doing… he worked at a slug’s place and couldn’t even figure out how to work the register or how to wrap the food for to go. He then served us inedible, burned to a crisp Brussels sprouts and a sandwich with most of the toppings spilled out; onions and sauce caked and soaked into the top of the bun. We left before he’d worked on the second sandwich and kids meal we had also ordered and got a full refund. I don’t know what was going on with this guy but it was absolutely unacceptable. My kids were hungry and we had to leave still hungry (and honestly, furious). sorry but that was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had at a restaurant. I’d rather drive over to Martinez for vegan food than risk stopping by here again.

Vegan Comfort Food in Vallejo! - Edit
I’m glad it’s here! I usually have the Fried Chicken Spicy Deluxe sandwich. Very tasty!! The crispy Brussel sprouts were soft and greasy. The fries were sprinkled with seasoning and pretty good. I don’t go often bc it’s not particularly healthy food but I like to support them. Friendly service. The faux meats are all his own brand!

I'm so happy that Vallejo now has a vegan restaurant. Better Chew Kitchen is all around a great place. The founder, Chef Chew, is super friendly and very helpful. The cashew cheese Mac and cheese is so satisfying. I wish every Mac and cheese tasted that good! I loved the Italian mushroom cheesesteak. The mushrooms were nice, juicy, and large, the bread was perfection, and the cheese was great.

Everything on the menu is tasty but my goodness is that friend chicken next level! The breading is delicious and tastes like how I remember fried chicken tasting. It’s even better cold (perfect to take on picnics). Definitely recommend this place to vegans and non vegans alike.

I had the Better Chew Steak and Cheese Fries and they were great! I added some ketchup for sweetness, but the fries are seasoned wonderfully and the flavor of the steak and cheese sauce were fantastic! I will return to try more of their menu!

This is the only vegan restaurant in the county, so I’m not used to finding a whole menu of vegan foods. Everything there is good, but the steak sandwiches are amazing. I like the Italian sandwich that has mushrooms on it. The Mac and cheese is good. I took some leftovers home and mixed the Mac and cheese with the kale salad the next day, and that was one tasty lunch.

Here on opening day and one of the first in the door. I had the Chicken Bar B Chew sandwich and it was crazy good! The Steak N Fries were awesome too. Wife had the ribs and they were tasty! We will be back and wishing Chef Chew great success in Vallejo!

Read moreThe regular menu has several options using Chef Chew's brand of meats. We tried Philly cheese steak (relish and mustard ☹️). Chicken pieces needed dip options. I only saw a packet, ketchup?... I don't know. I would have liked to have seen a couple: ranch, bbq...
I would have ordered salads since I eat whole foods regularly and hope that the dressings wouldn't have oils. 🤞 But they weren't available then.
My husband would like to see cornbread on the menu. Desserts are coming. 🙂 Hopefully no sugar options on them. 🤞
