On the Mountain of Vegan Heaven - Edit

5 stars for variety/nutritional value
3 stars for taste
5 stars for customer service and friendly environment

Run by Jen Tyler and her wonderful family, this place is like stepping into family home. The vibrantly delicious menu options are full of ingredient variety and nutritional balance. The generous portions make each dish a sharing experience and brings our innate need to huddle, share, and eat.

It was unforced to enter into a positive and eye opening conversation with the owner about our vegan experiences in different parts of the world. Living by example, Jen is happy to teach you the secrets of the dish to you, including where to source the ingredient in the local area. This is often the big battle for vegans, adjusting to seasonality and keeping a constant variety in your diet.

So whether you are passing over the mountain to try something new, trying to learn more about the vegan diet, or more about the local culture, Bella Vegan celebrates it all. Go!

Just Lovely - Edit

This little hole-in-the-wall eatery is perfect for a cozy get-together with friends. The food is wholesome and tasty (even if you're not veg in any way) and the portions are generous. The prices are very reasonable, if not plain cheap. The owner makes the food herself, and will even serve you if her son's hands are full. Family oriented, pleasant atmosphere. Highly recommended!

Pros: friendly and cozy, exceptional value for money, healthy!

Cons: bit small so don't bring a rugby team :)

A Must Visit...even if you're not veggie! - Edit

My first taste of Bella Vegan came in the form of biscuits. The previous shop sold biscuits made by Bella Vegan's owner - cashew nut and cranberry shortbread-like delicacies that were demolished in minutes.

My second visit to Bella Vegan was earlier this year, with my mother. Being a vegetarian, she's always keen to try vegan meals but is slightly hesitant toward their texture. She was surprised and delighted by Bella Vegan's egg-free omelette, stuffed with mushrooms, onions, peppers and garlic. (So much so, she went out and bought chickpea flour the next day!) I had the Mexican Hot-Pot, a mildly spicy broth of potato, butternut, carrots, peppers, marrows and more! With it came some coconut cream and chutney, as well as a few basmati rice latkas. We complimented our meals with a fresh juice. This is not the run of the mill preservative rich stuff that one finds in most restaurants, but raw pressed veggie/fruit goodness. Our combination was beetroot, ginger and apple. Needless to say, we didn't need dinner that night!

Bella Vegan has a very relaxed atmosphere, which compliments the alternative lifestyle that grows in Old Muizenberg. There are plenty of books to read, and even some knitting to be done if you are so inclined. The menu changes according to what's in the kitchen, and the portions are generous.

I have yet to go back, simply due to time constraints, but I would recommend Bella Vegan to EVERYONE. If you weren't aware of their ethical stance, you would hardly know they are 100% vegan. Keep up the great work and friendly service!

Pros: Easy to get to from False Bay Station, Sweet and Savoury Options, Affordable for the young and old

Cons: Toilet difficult to access , Needs better quality coffee

Good value and excellent food - Edit

Bella Vegan Cafe is a little gem of an eatery in the heart of Muizenberg Village. It's very well priced, has a decent choice of 100% Vegan food and is only a few minutes from the False Bay or Muizenberg train station. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. The atmosphere is warm and and informal. The two couches make a comfortable spot to view all day documentaries on environmentalism, veganism, social issues...and other interesting topics. The Menu is "just a suggestion" and customers are encouraged to mix and match as they like. There are fresh juiced drinks, coffee/lattes, teas and real hot chocolate to wet your whistle. The Specials board changes daily. Bella Vegan is mostly a Lunchtime venue, although there is a small breakfast/brunch selection to choose from. The prices are very affordable with the most expensive item which is usually a full meal, at only R50. Their Cookies and Pies are almost legendary but you'll have to come early so as not to miss out. All in all a good experience.

Pros: Inexpensive., Excellent food., Comfortable vibe

Cons: Closed on Sundays
