Home away from home

From the moment we arrived Nikki made us feel so welcome. We were greeted at the front by Scott and then led through to our gorgeous cottage by the old puppies, Khan and Chaz.
The cottage has everything you need for a cosy and relaxing escape from the city. We spent our time playing board games and drinking wine by the fire. Nicky made us two incredible breakfasts and the best pizza we have had in a long while!
We were able to feed the chooks (and one very handsome rooster) some canned corn and my personal highlight, Frankie the stear a couple of green apples! Walking around the cottage yard, you can see Roos around the perimeter that are safely snacking over Nikki’s watchful eye.
There are lots of vegan friendly places in Castlemaine and Nikki was kind enough to tell us about her favourites. Also check out the markets if you are there over the weekend.
This truly is such a special piece of the world. The work Nikki does with the Roos is so inspiring. We are in awe!
We can’t wait to come back and play veganopoly round two! Thank you Nikki and Scott.

Pros: Khan and Chaz! , Breakfast is included, Friendly hosts

Worst Host in Australia.

Having looked forward to our first trip to Australia from the Uk, we were excited about staying at Bed and Broccolli. The reviews were good and raved about the cooking of the host and her friendliness. We also liked the idea of our payment helping the wildlife she rescued.
We booked a meal for six pm and were told via email to arrive at five pm. We travelled for three and a half hours to get there and arrived FIVE minutes past five. We were refused a meal. Host Nicky said she needed to start the meal at four thirty(Therefore why was it not ready or almost ready?) and she ran the place like a regiment because she cared for many animals also.!! There were a few dozen chickens , two dogs, two cows in the field and she was handrearing two joeys which by her own admission only had one bottle a day. I run an animal rescue in the Uk so I know how much or how little work was involved at this establishment and all I can say is that it would not have taken me the entire day. So nothing she said made sense. It was a bank holiday so nowhere was open in the nearby town so we went without food.
The cooker was broken so we could not make ourselves a meal and breakfast consisted of two choices. banana pancakes (nice but made with little regard to presentation) and beans and tomatoes! This from a woman who has written a very fancy coffee table cookbook with many innovative recipes.
For the three days of our stay she studiously avoided us, only emerging from her own house when she could see us driving away.
On the day we left she did not even come out of her house to say goodbye.
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel unwelcome and an inconvenience.
Her husband and the two dogs were friendly but other than that we were sorry we did not book to stay somewhere else.
Interestingly we then stayed at a non vegan Bed and breakfast and the delightful hosts produced amazing and innovative vegan food which they had never done before. It far surpassed Nicky's food. The disappointment of our stay at B& Brocolli stayed with us for the entire six weeks of our trip and almost ruined our holiday, we were so upset at her behaviour.

Pros: rural peaceful location

Cons: Host is unwelcoming and rude., Food is average. We had better food at non vegan , Cooker broken. Run like Army barracks.

Relaxing!

This was so relaxing. We had a vegan pizza for Friday night when we arrived. It was delicious and there was an oven to heat it. The b&b is private and was a lot bigger than I was expecting. I've never slept on such comfortable sheets, it was incredible. The property is amazing and was fun to wander around. We saw kangaroos and fed the hens. Thanks Nikki for the corn to feed them. We spent the day in Bendigo but we could have easily spent it in and around the b&b as there was a lot to see and do. Breakfasts and evening meals (plus dessert) were delicious. Nikki and Scott were lovely hosts and we definitely had privacy. We also had a tv and DVD. Can't wait to stay again!

Great for a weekend away

We recently stayed two nights here and had a fantastic time. The cottage is a beautiful (and quirky) space, very conducive to relaxation. It was great to escape Melbourne for a bit and spend some time recharging in a natural environment. Also, you can see the stars at night, really see them, so make sure you take a look up at night.

There are a lot of friendly animals around who you can interact with as much or as little as you want; Khan (one of the dogs) will absolutely worship you if you give him a bit of attention.

We had 2 breakfasts and one dinner (with dessert of course). All the food was very good, with the dessert (lemon [censored] pudding) being exceptional.

Nikki was a great host, friendly and helpful, while giving you space.

Pros: Delicious vegan food to your door, Peaceful and relaxing, Khan (a very friendly dog)

Cons: Very reasonably priced for a B&B, You may hear a rooster in the morning

Five stars

Everything about our stay at bed and broccoli was perfect. It was winter and we had a fire in the lounge. The vegan sausages were the best I've ever had, and my husband couldn't get enough of the pudding. We met some gorgeous and funny animals, namely Hef and Khan. The owner Nikki was a pleasure to get to know and we have kept in touch. We would love to make it back someday!

Heaven on Earth!

We had the pleasure of staying at Bed and Broccoli in November 2012. I honestly think that this is the nicest accommodation that I have ever stayed in, because it is the most peaceful and most relaxing. The B&B / retreat is like a little piece of heaven on Earth. The owners of the B&B, Nikki & Scott, were incredibly kind to us and made us feel at home from the very beginning. The living area has a lovely spacious bedroom, clean bathroom area and a kitchenette with dining table and chairs. This goes through to a big living room. In the living room there is a sofa, TV and stereo. There is also a good selection of books, CD's and films for entertainment. Guests are of course permitted to spend time with the animal residents and the owners take great pride in sharing the stories of how the animals came to live at Bed and Broccoli. The animals are exceptionally well cared for and we really enjoyed interacting with them and discovering their personalities. At the time of our stay a female peafowl, Delilah, had just begun to raise her little babies. The proud peacock father, Samson, was always nearby. This was a truly lovely sight to see. The B&B is also home to hens, roosters, cows and two dogs. During our time at the B&B we felt very relaxed. For us it was a chance to connect with nature and unwind. We could even see the stars at night - not something that we typically see in England! The vegan food was also amazing. Nikki's scrambled tofu is perhaps the best breakfast that I have ever had and my partner was a massive fan of Nikki's white chocolate mud cake. Bed and Broccoli would make a great get away destination for veggie or vegan couples. Even those who are not veggie but veggie curious would benefit from staying here and learning more about the cruelty-free lifestyle through connecting with the animals and spending time with Nikki & Scott. A lovely stay and certainly the highlight of our trip to Australia - by a mile.

Pros: Everything

Cons: Nothing
